Why don't you just leave?

The words hurt more then the time she cut her face while sword fighting, it hurt more then when she was at the bottom of the ocean, trapped in a little bubble, knowing that she would die. It hurt and stung and ripped her to shreds.

Why didn't she?

She could leave at any time, any second, she could just turn her back and walk away. She could pretend that none of this was real, that it was just a twisted up nightmare. She could go back home, and be a normal twelve year old, and not a general running a war.

Steven watched her expectantly, his normally welcoming eyes seemed to have hardened over the last few weeks, glassing over. Her fists were at his side, like he was trying to stop himself from hitting Connie.

This is what it come down to. This one choice.

Should she stay?

Or leave?

She took one step towards Steven, he tensed up, and his eyes froze over instead of melting, like Connie hoped. The pain grew, pulling heart strings that Connie didn't know could hurt so much.

This wasn't the same Steven that she knew. This wasn't the same Steven that would die for her.

"Do you want me to?" Connie asked. Steven took a deep breath.

A pause.

"You're a good fighter."

"Steven! I'm asking you if you want me to stay, as a friend, not as a general!" Connie shouted, sobs threatening to drown her words even before they came out her mouth.

A pause.

Connie shook her head. And to think that all that time, Steven really wanted her to stay. He lied to her. He didn't really want her there, he needed her there to win the war. The answer didn't come.

And if he wanted her there as a friend, he would've answered already, right?

She turned, one swift and fluid motion, turning around at her heel and storming off. She would never return again.

"I want her to stay."

"Then why didn't you tell her that?

"I didn't want her to get hurt."
