I started to rewatch Steven Universe and I noticed a few things. When Amethyst and Pearl are explaining fusion, they say that when gems fuse, not only their physical side is fused together, but their mental side.
When Ruby and Sapphire fused, they looked strange at first, with their clothes and the hair and the color is all messed up. But as it went along, they became more and more normal looking, and more human looking.
When Amethyst fuses with Garnet, it's completely unstable because Amethyst feels big and powerful and like she could do anything, so the fusion is huge, and powerful and makes them feel like they could do anything.
When Pearl fuses with Amethyst, Pearl feels less insecure and more powerful. That's why their fusion is much bigger than both of them.
When Pearl fuses with Garnet, she feels happy and bubbly, so Sardonyx is funny and always happy.
