I headcanon that corrupted gems are not cracked or broken or chipped. They're not hurt physically. They have a mental disability.
Rose always tried to help the corrupted gems, didn't she? But she was trying to fix them. They weren't broken,, not at least physically. Steven was able to help Centipeedle because he treated him like a real gem, not just some creature that was broken and needed fixing.
He loved him, he became friends with him.
That's why he was able to help Centipeedle, at least a little.
