Family

As Steven grew, he had people join and leave his family. But it never really changed.

As a baby, he had his father, and that was family.

When he was a little older, it grew, and the Crystal Gems became part of his family, and that was family.

When he was twelve, he met Lapis, and she became family, and that was family.

But she left. It was painful, and hurt for a while, but Lapis was going back to her family, and that was family.

He met Connie, and she wanted to become part of the fantastic world that no human knew about. And she was family, and that was family.

Peridot came, and although it didn't feel like it at first, she slowly became family, a strange part of family, but family nonetheless. And that was family.

Lapis came back, still family, but left with Jasper, saving her family. That was family.

Lapis came back, broken and afraid, but she was a part of family, a distant part that only stayed with Peridot most of the time, but still family, and that was family.

Bismuth came and went so quickly that it didn't really feel like family to Steven, but everyone else thought of her as family, so she was family. That was family.

Jasper didn't feel like family either, she hurt everyone so much, and everyone was so afraid of her that it didn't feel like a proper part of family, but Amethyst thought of her as family, so she was- in a sense- some sort of family.

Steven met his first real extended family, too, and learned that his family name wasn't really Universe, but that was okay. Apparently he had lots of family, family that he never met, but they were family still, even though Steven didn't know them.

Steven had family, through everything, the idea of his mother, his father, the Crystal Gems, Lapis and Peridot.

Sometimes Steven only kept family because he loved them.

Sometimes Steven only had his family to keep.
