As war crept closer, the tension grew. Steven made sure the word spread quickly, made sure that everyone was prepared to evacuate. It felt all so stupid though, where were they suppose to run to when the war started? They couldn't run anywhere on earth, the earth was going to be attacked.
As tension rose, their small family was being torn apart. Steven has known the Crystal Gems for the last twenty one years of his life, and it wasn't the first time that the family was being ripped apart. There were many times that there were little rips and tears in their family that needed to be stitched back up.
But this time Steven feared that their entire family would be split.
Pearl wanted to leave, to use one of the Warp Pads to run to one of the abandoned Homeworld colonies where they would be safe, and where they couldn't be found. Steven argued that his mother wouldn't have wanted, that his mother wanted them to keep humans safe as well, but Pearl said that his mother would have wanted the Crystal Gems to survive for as long as they could have.
Amethyst didn't know what to think. Steven, Garnet, and Pearl were all trying to get her to agree with them, and she disappeared a few days ago. Pearl complained that Amethyst was being stupid, and wasn't thinking, wasn't using her brain. She said that Amethyst was a coward, and that they should leave her behind and flee to safety.
Garnet argued that they had to fight for humans, but Pearl said that humans were what brought this war. What brought the First Gem War as well.
Humans, she shouted, are the reason why we have to keep fighting! Aren't you sick of it? They don't do anything for us! THEY TOOK ROSE AWAY FROM US, HUMANS ARE WHY WE ARE ALONE!
Ruby was ready to fight, to defend what she believed in and what Rose believed in, but Sapphire sided with Pearl. saying that the Crystal Gems had to survive for another day to have a chance to stand up to Homeworld once again.
Peridot was captured by Homeworld, and Steven didn't know it yet, but her mind had been wiped clean and she was back to being nothing more than a drone gem. She didn't remember anything at all, nothing could bring her memories back. She was working for the other side, and Steven didn't even know it.
Lapis was heartbroken, and she ran, ran and ran away until she was too tired to run anymore, then she hid. She hid in the depths of the ocean, in the darkness that had once been her prison. She hid from Steven, knowing that he would be equally heartbroken if he saw her in this condition. Steven would cry so much if he saw her like this, shattered and in the dark. Shattered. Being shattered wasn't all that bad. It was like sleep.
She knew it wasn't sleep. Sleep was peaceful and calming. Being shattered was restless and painful, paralyzing.
Their family was tearing apart, seam by seam. Steven was trying his best to keep everyone to stay, but they were storming away from him in their own paths. Even Ruby and Sapphire left each other.
Love was not the answer. Not today.
Connie was the only person that stayed, and even then they had their own fights. Connie stood her ground on her own ideas, her plans that they fight until they drop and they buy time.
Steven tried to reason that if they fight until they drop no one would be left to fight.
Connie countered that they weren't going to able to win, not today. It was best if they just fought and bought as much time as they could.

"Steven, please. Just listen. Come with me, you'll be safe." Pearl was standing on the Warp Pad, ready to leave without anyone else, without her family.
"Would mom want this?" he tried to coax her to staying, just a while longer. Just a little while longer, just a little while for him to get everything together, to get everyone back together again.
"Rose would have wanted you safe, Steven! Do you not understand why she gave herself up for you! To keep you safe, Steven! Do none of you understand!"
There was a pause, and Steven ready to believe that Pearl might just warp then and there, leave him behind and leave their family. But she was crying, and she knew better than to make big decisions in the heat of the moment when she was angry. She might regret it.
"Do you love this world? Earth? Do you love it?" Steven gestured around them, to the glittering waters of the ocean where Lapis's gem shards were in, and at the stars, where Peridot was back at, working to end Steven and her old family, trying to kill the earth where she called home.
"Yes. I love this planet. It was always Rose's favorite."
"Then defend it." Steven shouted. Pearl turned to him, and for a second Steven thought that she might stay.
She left.
Steven wished he was fourteen again, when he could make things go his way just with an emotional speech. But things have changed. Emotions and choices were separate now.
Now the family was really split up. Sapphire had left for the abandoned Homeworld colonies the week before. Ruby and Amethyst were still someone on Earth, but Steven doubted that he would be able to find them. After Sapphire left, Ruby vanished. Love wasn't enough to keep them together.
Now it just Steven and Connie.
If only they could survive.
