a repeated poke at the back of his knee makes josh turn around from where he's standing, talking to mia's cousins, a beer in his hand. looking up at him with a shy smile is lola.

"um, josh?"

he crouches down in front of her with an amused expression. "what's up, birthday girl?"

"i have to show you something," says the little girl with a knowing giggle, covering her mouth with her hands.

josh nods his head and stands back u, gesturing with his hand. "lead the way."

lola grins, flashing him a toothy smile before taking his hand and pulling him over to one of the picnic tables where the other little girls are sitting around mia.

he raises an eyebrow when he sees a bunch of little kid makeup sprawled across the table, and then he looks at mia.

"doesn't she look pretty?" grins lola, looking up at josh.

mia has about four different colors of lipstick sloppily applied on her lips and near her cheeks, and an illegal amount of glitter on her eyelids.

josh stifles a laugh, pulling his lips in to hide his obvious amusement. "super pretty," he nods and takes his phone out of his back pocket.

mia glares up at him. "i hate you."

"love you too, babe," he grins and snaps a picture of his girlfriend looking like she's gonna kill him.

suddenly, the expression on mia's face changes and she looks around at the group of little girls. "hey, you should do josh's makeup next."

"oh, no--" his eyes widen.

lola cheers, nodding and clapping her hands with excitement. "josh's makeup!" she giggles, grabbing his hand again and making him sit down at the bench of the table.

"boys don't wear makeup," says one of lola's friends, a doe-eyed blonde girl named clara.

lola rolls her eyes in a total dramatic fashion. "they can if they want," she insists, matter-of-a-factly.

josh shakes his head. "i don't really want--"

"make him look pretty, lola," mia says before josh can finish his sentence. she looks over at him with a too-much-lipstick smile, one that says this is what you get for taking my picture.

so she does.

josh ends ups with sticky hot pink lipstick, messy circles of blush, and a heap of glitter patted into the scruff along his jaw. there's even a princess tiara placed lopsided on his head.

"how come i didn't get a crown?" asks mia, pretending to be upset and jealous.

her niece rolls her eyes. "cause you're already a princess, tia. duh."

"my princess," clarifies josh with a broad smile, leaning over and kissing her on the lips.

lola squeals, covering her eyes. "eww! tia and josh kissed!" she exclaims, her and her other friends giggling and running off.

mia looks at josh with a raised eyebrow and an amused grin. "i think now's out change to sneak inside and take this makeup off before they notice."
