josh?"

"yeah?"

"can we go to the lot?"

josh doesn't even respond. he stays silent while nodding his head, eyes focused in front at the road. him and mia are twenty minutes shy of being at the apartment complex, and by now the sunset has come and gone. it's only seven in the evening, but due to it being nearing the end of october, the days are shorter.

after a few minutes, josh puts pressure on the breaks as they reach the parking lot of the abandoned hospital. he puts his car in park and turns towards mia with an expectant, patient expression. he's waiting for an explanation.

"we haven't been out here in a long time," says mia, eyes looking out the dashboard. "d'you still have those blankets in the back?"

josh nods, because he does. after unbuckling his seatbelt, the pink haired male turns an at awkward angle and leans towards the backseat of the car. he retrieves two throw blankets and offers one to mia, asking a soft, "wanna go up?"

the brunette smiles half-heatedly. "i was hoping you'd say that."

it's been an hour. one hour of quiet, one hour of uncomfortable silence that josh feels is gonna be broken at any time. it's an almost morbid thought, but a part of him wants mia to cry. to break down in front of him so that he can help her. to be vulnerable and allow josh to be comforting.

they're sitting on the roof - er, laying on the roof. and even though josh is incredibly comfortable with the position of mia's head on his chest and one of her legs hiked up over his hip, he can't help but remain focused on waiting for her to say something.

"i love you," josh finally decides to speak up, and the words of affirmation are the first to come out. "you know that, don't you?"

mia nods.

"like a lot. like - more than i've ever loved another person in my entire life. well, i mean, not my mom - cause y'know she kinda gave birth to me and all, but you're my whole world--"

"josh," mia's voice cuts through his words. "i know what you mean."

josh is waiting for an 'i love you too', however, and when he doesn't get one, he frowns. "then say it back."

"i love you. what - did you think that i didn't?"

"no, no, of course not," insists josh. his eyes are focused on identifying constellations that light up the night's sky.

"then why are you talking to me like i'm so fragile?" at this point, mia sits up and criss crosses her legs.

josh props himself up on his elbows, tearing his gaze from the sky. it's not an easy question to answer to, but all josh is worrying about is mia. "because you just met your biological father, and found out that him and your mom are dating, and you're acting like it didn't even happen."
