yoshua💕 : are you up yet?

yoshua💕 : i know it's really early in columbus

yoshua💕 : but i just wanted to talk to you before i have to get ready for the show and stuff

with a heavy sigh, josh sets his phone down on his chest and anxiously taps his fingers against the hardcase cover. it's two in the afternoon in japan, which means it's two in the morning in ohio. it's also his and mia's anniversary and all he can do is think about how much his heart aches.

"hey, dude," tyler taps his fingers on the outside frame of josh's bunk. "we gotta head out soon for that interview."

josh reaches out to lazily pull back the curtain. "okay. i'll be out in a sec - just gonna try calling mia again."

the brunette nods sympathetically and offers his best friend a small, encouraging smile. "sure, man. whatever you gotta do. tell her i said hi if she picks up."

"will do," replies josh, his voice sort of monotone and lacing emotion.

after shutting the curtain, the drummer picks up his phone and taps around until he finds the facetime logo next to mia's contact, and then he clicks it.

on the fifth ring, when josh is about to just end the call, his phone broadcasts the word 'connecting' on the top of the screen. josh feels relieved.

"what d'you want?" asks mia, voice muffled and sleepy and full of clear confusion. "i'm sleeping, j."

he laughs. "i can see that. well, i can't really see anything cause all your lights are off and the screen is pitch black-"

"what d'you want?"

"it's our anniversary," says josh with a small, bittersweet smile. he holds his phone up so that he's in view - laying on his back in the small confides of the bunk. "i wanted to say that i love you."

mia makes a tired noise that sounds like a mix of a sigh and a whimper. "i love you too. but did you have to call so damn early? i just fell asleep like two hours ago."

he frowns. "why so late?"

"couldn't sleep," responds the brunette. hesitantly, she raises the brightness on her phone until josh can see the shadow image of her face, illuminated by the screen.

hearing this makes josh feel incredibly guilty, because he knows that mia sleeps a hell of a lot better when he's there. it makes him wish he was there next to her, cuddling her while they both fall asleep whispering sweet nothings and giggling secrets.

"well, thanks for putting up with me for a whole year," continues josh. "i know i'm a pain sometimes, like when i call you in the middle of the night."

she scoffs, "oh that's my favorite part about this relationship."

he rolls his eyes with amusement. "ha ha, aren't you funny."

"i'm very funny, thank you," mia says back, matter-of-a-factly. she rolls over onto her side and pouts at the camera. her eyes are all puffy from sleep. "i wish you were here so i could kiss you."

josh puckers his lips at the camera and makes a 'mwah' noise. "there - does that make you feel better?"

"eh, a little bit. virtual kisses aren't nearly as good as real life kisses, though."

"hey, i tried!" grins the male. he stares fondly at his phone screen and then bites his lip with debate. "hey babe?"

"hmm?" she hums.
