I sat quietly at my desk.
Noreza sprawled out on her chair
yawning, complaining about homework.I nod and smile,
"Did you have time to finish it?"
"Are you joking? Last night was the finale of me and mum's drama, I had no time!"
I feel a pang of envy.
Aoi never cared to make
any effort to
befriend us,
to connect withSuki and I.
She munched on popcorn
and took up the couch
when Father was at work,
demanding Suki and I
to watch Zeira
because she wasbusy.
I focus on Mr Whitaker as he walks in.
He smiles at us,
the wrinkles on his old face
rippling,
folding,
lips partingto reveal a row of straight teeth.
"I'm very proud of you all, class."
He tells us,
"The last assignment was very well done."
A boy at the back yells in victory,
a low wave of laughter sounds out.
"I'll be calling out the highest marks. Please come up to my desk and collect your prize."
He pauses for effect . . .
"Harmony, full marks."
