When Mother parks outside the house
I pick up a strange feeling.
Like a mixture
of anticipation
and of an unspoken
apology,
it blankets us tightly.
Suki and I remain quiet
as Mother unlocks the front door.
We exchange glances,
something's wrong.
Holding my breath,
I duck in under Mother's arm.
She keeps the door open for Suki too,
then closes it as we toe off our shoes
That's when He walks in
and my world falls apart.
