Mei was tanned
and constellations
formed from
a thousand freckles
sprinkled her cheeks and nose.
little dark brown dots
from playing long hours
in the Japanese sun

There was no sun here
only storm clouds
and bucketfuls of rain.
I wonder how she felt
about the dismal weather

The thought was quickly shattered
by the bell for lunch and
like a herd of cattle
the thirty students rose
from their brightly colored
plastic seats to make their way
To the drafty lunch halls

I grabbed my lunchbox
With it's torn yellow fabric handle
And walked out of the classroom
To the nearest fire exit staircase
To the nearest semblance
Of peace
