the eighth

I've always been naive
and hopeful
and emotional
and dramatic

and I'm always, always, always
easily excitable,
easy to please,
e  a  s  y
so, so easy to fool
with a heart of glass

And I was at my worst
when I hit my tenth birthday.
On the eighth of
a cold and wet
late-autumn morning,
my eyes fluttered open
to the sound of Aoi and Father arguing.

Ah, I thought
maybe today's the day

that he walks out
and leaves us

Aoi would never walk out
because Father married her
with a condition,

"If you want a divorce
the kids stay with me."

She's been bound to his side since.
Because,
though she might lie around
and binge watch dramas,
she loves her children
and would give her life
for them, for their sake,
in a heartbeat.

I hear her crying
and it quickly turns
to sobbing

and I wonder what
Father's said
what he's done
this time
