The smell of fresh bread
and bubbling soup
hits me before I reach
mother's large kitchen.

From inside,
I can hear an orchestra
of cooking utensils
and the steady
chop
chop
chop
of Mother slicing something.

I walk in to find Suki.
She stands by the high worktop,
mixing vegetables together.
Onions, tomatoes and cucumbers
(always cucumbers now that He's here).

"Oh, good girl Harmony.
You can set the table."

Mother says,
not turning around.

I silently stalk over to the cabinets,
grab four plates,
then leave the kitchen.

Father's on his laptop,
his fingers going
klack
klack
klack
on his old keyboard.

I try not to look at him
as I set the plates down.

"Who's lazy now?"

My heart screams.
