Aunt Eevie takes me to her room
she's been sleeping in Aoi's room
and it looks brighter
from her touch and her presence.
She sits down on the edge of the bed
and I sit down next to her
She holds my hands
and I squeeze back
"My dear, sweet Harmony."
She sighs,
"Don't let anyone make you feel
like you're not worth happiness
like you're not worth love
like you're not welcome"
I nod
"I'll be back again
so until then
I wish you and Suki well.
I love you my darling
know that you'll
always, always, always
be welcome to stay with me."
I nod again
"And this,"
She leans over
opens the drawer
of the bedside table
and pulls out
something small
and metallic.
Her soft, tanned hands
pry open my small fingers
and she presses a cell phone
into the palm of my hand.
I blink in surprise"Don't let anyone take this away from you.
You can talk to me through this
Here, I'll show you."
I listen and watch carefully
as she shows me how to navigate
the deviceFather and Aoi have phones
and I'd seen a couple of my classmates
stealthily slip them into their pockets
but I'd never held one
never used one
never dreamed of owning one.
"Thank you,"
I whisper as she hands me
the cell phone
I look down at it
and realize that it's
my key
my ticket
my connection
to Aunt Eevie
to the only person
who's showed us love
I grip it tightly,
"I'll keep it hidden, I promise."
