A week passes.
I'm silent everyday in class.
I keep my head down.
I keep my hand down.
I wince every time
Mr Whitaker praises my work.
My top marks.I go home exhausted.
It's loud when I walk through the door.
I hear Aoi's TV show.
Father in the kitchen.
Zeira's electronic teddy bear
sings somewhere.Slipping in through the front door,
I head
upstairs to find Suki.I catch a glimpse of her
through the door that's slightly ajar,
in our room
on the dusty carpet. She sits near the box window
with an old catalogue
in her lap.She flips through the pages languidly.
I smile for the first time that day,
"I'm back, Suki."
"Welcome back!"
She looks up and grins at me
and I wonder
how she's able
to put on such a brave front,
such a strong mask,
to conceal the anguish
and the neglectwe
feel
everyday.
