The Wheaties swim
in their sea of silky white milk
in front of me and Suki.
Zeira was still asleep
and I prayed that she stayed sleeping
until they decided to come back.
Aoi wasn't early giving birth
this time.
If anything, she was a week late
so I hoped that they'd be back soon.
"Harmony, can I go out to play?"
Suki lifted the plastic bowl
and slurped the last of her milk.
She set it down
and stared at me
with warm hazel eyes
like smokey quartz gemstones
g l i t t e r i n g as they reflected
the early morning light.
I glanced at the empty bowl
and sighed in relief.
She was eating,
that was enough for me.
"Yeah, just wear your cardigan.
It's really cold."
