Spiteful changes

As soon as we walk up to
the tall black door,
the artificial scent
of fabric softener,
the type Mei uses,
overwhelms me.
Like it's trying to push me away.
I fight it and inhale sharply
just to spite it

I'm not going anywhere

For a moment,
All goes still.
The silence rings in my ears
And the sweet smell
Materializes in front of me
With it's clear skin
With it's wide, light eyes
And I realize who it is

"Oh,"
She blinks at us in surprise,
"You're here already?"
Then a sudden smile
splits her face in two
bright like it's trying
to blind me
"Oh I've missed you girls!
Come inside,
it's a bit messy still
but..."

Her voice tunes out

and all I see are her cherry lips
moving frantically
their corners upturned

Oh, I think
She hasn't changed
She's still the same

Then another though
fills my mind
as we follow her
into the warm living room,

Have I changed?
