"We'll be visiting your Father and Aunty Aoi today."
The cold milk of my cereal
nearly chokes me
but I swallow it firmly,
"What?"
I heard Mother the first time round,
but a part of me holds onto
the thin slip of hope
that I might've misheard
her death sentence.
"They invited us for dinner,
we'll be going after you come home.
Be good at school."
Mother shucks on her coat,
grabs her handbag,
and rushes out of the door.
I turn to Suki
and she stares at me.
Her eyes mirror my confusion,
my discomfort,
and the underlying feeling
of sick anxiety.
"I'd almost forgotten them,
and now we're going back?"
"It's only to visit,"
my reassurance is true but empty.
The feeling from this morning
stirs again.
