Noreza ended Year 4
with the announcement
that her family would be moving back
to Pakistan for her older sisters wedding.
I let out a discreet sigh of relief
because for the last part
of our failing friendship
she'd made continuous
passive aggressive
comments on
the way I
excelled
classes
At one point I stopped trying
I didn't get my work done
I left assignments
incomplete
incorrect
But Mr Whitaker called me over
and told me that my future
mattered more than
what Noreza
might sayAnd, though I didn't fully understand him
I nodded and decided not to let
her taunts and comments
affect me
She'd bump into me
trip me up with an
apologetic oops
watch yourself
she'd stay by
my side as
a 'friend'But friends don't ruin each other's self esteem
But friends don't push each other down
But friends don't bully each other
Then pass it off as a joke
A joke that everyone finds funny
except me.
I didn't say goodbye to her
I didn't sign the goodbye card
I didn't eat any of the goodbye cake
I didn't think that this was an adieu
It was another fresh start
It was year 5
without
her.
And I couldn't have been happier.
