of our classroom
as we whiz our way through
this week's homework."Did you see the new girl today?"
Mei smiles, putting her pencil down.
She still speaks Japanese with me,
despite now knowing how to
talk English.It's our little secret language.
"The one from...where was it?"
"I think it was Albania, or something.
Her name was Kiya, I think.""Your dad's from somewhere
different from your mum, right?"I ask, because she's mentioned before but it slipped my mind.
"Mum's Japanese,
but dad's from Malaysia.We speak mostly Japanese though,
at home.""We speak just English at our house."
It doesn't cross my mind,
how I never call it
