Flipflops squeal against wet tiles
and the smell of chlorine wafts
over into the changing room stalls.
"Harmony, do you have your goggles?"
"Uh-huh ann'e."
"And your slippers?"
"Yes, I've got them on."
"You and Suki don't know how
to swim, so please make sure you
stay in the shallow end
and that Suki keeps her floats on, okay?"
"I will ann'ejim, and yes,
she promised to keep them on."
Mother sighs,
tucks back the lock of hair
that escaped her scarf
and smiles at me nervously.
"I'm sorry, I wish I could stay
and make sure you'll be okay."
"It's okay, Mei and Kiya's mums are here.
We'll see you in the afternoon?"
Mother takes her pinky finger
and wraps it around mine.
