I suppressed a shriek when Sam lunged forward, almost knocking over the couch. I could barely hold onto Rupert while Paulie snatched me out of the way and positioned herself in front of me protectively, even though there was nothing she could possibly do to protect me from Sam.
"What do we do now?" I asked in a rushed whisper, scared beyond belief. Not just for me, but for Sam as well. How would she feel when she released she'd mauled her roommates? We couldn't let her hurt us, not just for our own sakes, but for hers as well.
"There's only one thing we can do," Eve breathed as she took a carefully measured step back from Sam's hunched figure. It looked like she was readying herself for a final lunge at our throats.
"And that is?" I asked breathlessly.
"Run!" Paulie and Eve yelled in unison as Sam finally lurched forward.
We all spurted toward the door to the hallway, but Sam got to me first. Her claws barely raked my back, but it still made me scream in pain. Rupert tumbled onto the floor as my shirt fell apart in rips. I felt blood trickle down my back, but I didn't have time to process any of it, as the front door suddenly swung open and hit me right in the face.
"Dem!"
I would recognize Eros' voice anywhere, even if I hadn't felt him rush over here in the commotion. A relieved cry escaped my mouth as Eros propelled himself between me and Sam.
"Stop it!" he commended, all of his mind control hitting her with force. "Get a grip, Sam!"
I backed into the hallway, keeping my gaze on my deranged werewolf friend. Her eyes were still wide and yellow, but her claws receded somewhat, making her appear more human.
"That's right," Eros told her in an almost hypnotic voice. "Reel it back in, Sam."
Instead of folding in on herself like I'd half-expected, Sam roared and lunged forward yet again. For the first time ever, I wished Eros' mind control was stronger. The wolf that had once been my trusted friend swung at my boyfriend with one of her enormous claws and threw him across the room. With a sick crack, he landed against the wall and landed in a pile of painful limbs. When he didn't get up, I panicked.
"Eros," I yelled, jumping past Sam to get to him. She pulled me back by my hair, her sharp teeth snapping at my throat. I cried out in pain as they nipped me, but I knew my pain was nothing compared to the state Eros was in. I could barely feel him through our bond.
Just when I thought I'd never get out from under Sam's strong grasp, I felt a strong arm around my middle, pulling me away from her. Sam snarled when she got struck in the face, but the person separating us was relentless.
"Stop it," a vaguely familiar voice told Sam sternly. "Don't you dare do that again."
Sam almost seemed to fold into herself, whining like a puppy that had just been kicked. Her claws slowly turned back into regular hands, her fur disappearing and her pupils dilating into their human form once more.
"Good girl," the male voice praised, his arm moving around my shoulders and pulling me against him. The smell of booze and cigarettes hit me, shaking me out of my panicked haze.
"Ben?" I asked, my voice less wobbly than I'd expected.
Before he could respond, Dylan and Simon rushed in, shocked to see Paulie, Eve and me standing around panting, with Ben as the big hero towering over us as Eros still lay on the floor, motionless. Sam had retreated behind the couch, where I'd found Rupert cowering only minutes earlier.
