As Sinead promised we got Stephen wrapped up in his big coat, gloves and hat and headed to the park. It was winter obviously but once the cold and frosty morning had passed, it was a really nice day. It was the perfect excuse to get out the flat and hang out with Sinead.
The swings and that were fenced in and we were on our own so he could run around so that's exactly what he did. He had so much energy to burn. It was like he was a different kid when he was outside. It was so good to see my little boy have so much fun.
We didn't have much to catch up on since we lived together. We didn't have any nostalgia to reminisce with, not the proper sort with the best friend you had for years and years. I only knew her because of Jamie, he worked a lot though so I hardly saw him. We still found things to chat about.
"Are you ready for Christmas?"
"Yeah, it's easier this year, less people to buy for."
"D'you think he'll get presents... From them?"
"I doubt it. They didn't like Christmas at the best of times and who's gonna remind them, their new wives?"
She smiled and she laughed. "I suppose not."
"He's not gonna miss out cos they're not around. We had to go."
"I know. D'you regret it, now he's back?"
"Not at all and he's only been twice, don't mean nothing yet."
It wasn't that I didn't trust him when he promised he was going to have the contract torn up so he could be there for us. I just hadn't seen anything to prove his talk. He hadn't even managed to pick up the phone now he was back in London with her.
Sinead was pushing him on the swing. "Are you alright?
"Yeah, fine." I answered quickly, wondering why she'd asked.
"You haven't stopped looking around." she said taking a look around the area herself. "Is George coming?"
"No, it's just us." I answered, bringing my attention back to Ste' as he giggled flying back and forth through the air.
It was just me, her and my toddler. I kept telling myself that. No one else was invited. No one else could come near us.
"Then why are you everywhere but here?" she accused.
"I'm just... looking around." I told her, thinking it was best not to panic her.
Someone was watching us, I could feel it. From all my years with Oasis I knew what it was like to have paparazzi or fans follow you around no matter what you were doing, most of them were no harm. Maybe some of them weren't ready to leave me alone yet. I didn't know where they were hiding but they were there.
"Ya look like you're auditioning for a horror movie." she pointed out. "Badly."
"I'm not, I'm just watching who's about."
She looked around. "There's no one about."
"What about him?" I nodded towards someone.
"He's miles away, walking his dog." she pointed out. "What is up with you?"
It didn't matter that he was far away, minding his own business walking his fat labrador. He was making me anxious. Being exposed was making me anxious. I thought I was keeping it all in but I wasn't doing good enough.
"Nothing. I need to keep him safe, don't I?"
"Is this a mum thing?"
"Yeah, it's dangerous out here." I insisted. "I'm just keeping them safe."
