Even though term didn't start until September, Lydia got called into school a lot for teacher training days and various meetings from just as soon as we were settled in the house. She was so focused on making the best start in her new job.

When she had to go to school I took the kids to Manchester to see Peggy or Kenzie and the girls, we even caught up with Haileigh and her twins.

When September came Stephen started nursery. It was only four days in a week and just the afternoons but it felt like far too much.

"I don't know what I'm gonna do without him." I commented as we were getting him ready.

"Does Noel know he's starting today?"

"I haven't told him, Peggy probably has."

"Why don't you ring him? It might be easier on you if share it with him."

"He made all these promises and then he's not even called. Why should I?"

"It was just an idea."

"Sorry, I'm not snapping at you. I just don't know what I'm supposed to do with him. When we were together he wanted to do everything for him and now, I don't know whether it's that he can't stand that I had the baby he wanted with his brother or what."

He'd had interviews and reports in the papers saying he'd gone clean of drugs just like he'd told me but he hadn't made much of an effort to contact us since. He said he was coming to the house party but he didn't show.

She put my phone in my hand to try to push away my reluctance. I agreed to do it but only so he could give Ste a good luck message and she walked away to give us some privacy. When I told him Ste was starting today he was mad.

"Why didn't you tell me it was today? I could've been there to see him off too."

"You didn't even come to see him at any point since we moved..."

"I couldn't make it, I had stuff to do. Why're you telling me if you're so mad at me for not coming? The Stacy I know would make sure I didn't know."

"Lydia thought I should share with you cos I'm still not ready to let him go."

"They'll let you have him start in January when he's three and I'll be there."

"No, he's ready and he's going today."

"You want me to be the one to say he he's got to go. Send him." he instructed. "Make sure he enjoys school more than we ever did."

"If we end up with an academic kid I'm doing another parental test on the both of us." I joked since neither of us got along with school.

"I'm surprised you got with a teacher, how weird is that?"

"Only if she was my teacher which she's clearly not." I pointed out, I hadn't thought about it but I would've never guessed I'd be with a teacher before I knew Lydia was one.

"She might be the one to bring out Ste's smarts."

"Not unless he just wants to get into art, I didn't get with her for that. I didn't even know she was a teacher until it was too late."

"He's gonna end up famous in some way so it might as well be art."

"Why's he got to be famous? I'm keeping him well outta all of that."

"All the rock stars' kids do. Come on, you know you'll end up with Our Kid in the end and get back into our stuff."

"No, that's not gonna happen. I'll drag him to me before he'll drag me back to any of that and no one wants that, do they?"
