I met George back at the flat with the kids. We found the door left wide open. Inside, it ransacked. Someone had been in trying to find something, it was such a mess I couldn't tell what was there and what was missing. I didn't know where to begin.
I couldn't believe some stranger had been through all our stuff. They'd been watching us waiting for us to leave. They'd been following us, watching our routines, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. I was scared they weren't done, they could come back so could other burglars or even worse people. They knew every inch of our home now.
We tried to make sense of it on our own. Neither of us knew where to start. I'd never been burgled before. I'd never had my house trashed before. The morning after one of Noel's parties was nothing compared to this. I tried to look around, tried to come up with a plan to fix this but I couldn't organise my mind.
George was even worse. She kept pointing out all the mess, all the damage they'd done, everything they'd touched and put out of place. She was making it so difficult to think.
The kids picked up on how upset we were and got upset themselves making the situation ten times worse. I tried to settle them both but I couldn't even calm myself.
When the police officer came, he had us look around for what was taken so he .
Although we clearly couldn't do without the police, I was so anxious having him there, snooping around. I thought he might sense that I was a murderer. I couldn't keep getting away with it. Now I was flaunting it, taunting the police bringing one of their officers to my house. I had no right to ask them to make me feel safe again.
"I can't find anything." I admitted. "I don't know what they've taken."
"Don't worry, take your time." He was so patient and reassuring, he was biding his time before he arrested me.
"I can't think. I just had a baby. I don't know." I just kept looking around overwhelmed.
"Is there anyone who could come over and help you?
"They were looking for something of Liam's." I realised.
"Liam... who's that your friend?"
"He's famous, they wanted his stuff." I didn't want to tell him any more than that, if I knew Liam, I knew Noel, there'd be no room to argue my innocence then.
"Well what belongings does he have here?"
"I don't know! His clothes and stuff."
I couldn't find anything that was missing but then the things that were taken, they weren't there no more. The officer decided we should secure the property and contact him when we'd had time to think. He thought the investigation wouldn't go anywhere because whoever it was, they'd let themselves in without breaking entry. It was someone with a key to our flat.
The landlord wouldn't come and have the locks changed. We couldn't get someone private in to look at it either because that was a breach of our contract. He didn't want us there anymore, he just didn't wanna say it. It was him, who did it or at least planned it. He was trying to drive us out and he'd succeeded.
I felt so isolated and scared, we all did. We couldn't stay there, it wasn't safe. We could never go back there.
We had no choice but to call Liam and ask to stay at his, just until we could find somewhere else. We had to start again elsewhere. We packed and waited for him outside. I jumped at the sight of every car that went past, desperate for it to be Paul's, terrified it was the home invaders, ready to attack us now we were there.
