Noel had left a voicemail on Liam's phone after I'd turned it off. Just as we'd thought, he wasn't happy to be cut off. It was like a minute of the Wibbling Rivalry recording gone solo. I listened to it normally and then more times on loud speaker.
"Real fucking clever, turning your phone off, dickhead. Liam, I know you're not with mam. D'you think I'm fucking stupid and I can't ring her? Why'd you fucking lie to me? You're with Stacy, who the fuck else would you be with? I don't give a fuck, it's not behind my back now. If you wanna be with her, if you wanna be a dad to that kid, grow the balls and tell Patsy the truth. I lied for Stacy. I didn't fucking lie for you. We all knew your marriage wouldn't last! Even I didn't think you'd fuck it up this fast. You got two birds pregnant five minutes after you'd gotten the certificate. Ya can't piss off from your wife, you stupid prick. She deserves knowing where she stands so she can move on from your sorry arse. She's not going anywhere so you'd better lawyer up or sort it the fuck out."
Even though he was mad and calling Liam out for his shit, I enjoyed listening to him. All this time, I thought we hated each other but it sounded like he wanted what I wanted even more than I did. He seemed convinced that they wouldn't figure things out and continue with their relationship but then again, he never did like her.
Liam watched me go through the options to play it again. "If you wanna talk to him, just do it."
"And say what? Sorry I cut short of your having a go at Liam so you had to leave a long as fuck voicemail."
"You could start with that." he shrugged. "Then everything else you've not said to him."
"I don't wanna talk to him." I put his phone down.
"There's no shame in missing him. You were together ages, he's your kid's dad, ya can't help it."
"I don't miss him."
"You've watched us on that tape as much as Ste has and now this."
"Despite my attempts to hide it from him." I rolled my eyes. "I'm just trying to figure out what all what he said means."
"People've been trying that for years."
"My parents promised seeing Billy is just a conversation with Noel away." I admitted why I was remotely interested in his brother now.
"I'll talk to him when I get to London. What've you got to tell him before they'll let you see him?"
"I don't need you to talk to him for me."
"Mam will've told him everything about Ste anyway. I bet you'll have nothing new to say to him."
That made something click in realisation. I didn't have to talk to him or tell him anything at all. It was already done, I just had to say it came from me. "Perfect."
"So you're going?"
"Maybe, I don't know. It'll wait til you're back. We'll go together as a proper family."
He smiled at the thought. "Yeah, a proper family."
...
Even though Liam knew he had to go, he was trying to come up with reasons not to. "Are you sure you want me to go now? I'll fucking miss your birthday."
"I like my birthdays to be any other day. You can make it up to me with some divorce papers. That's all I want so I can have you for keeps."
"It'll come, just be patient. I thought you'd ask for a car or summat."
"You could tell the DVLA there was a mistake and set me up with a new car if you're feeling generous." I smiled, knowing he couldn't do that.
"It won't be long now. I want the BMW back, I miss that car, me."
