Chapter Five:
Cold CoffeeAround two years after leaving Maria and the Mexican coven, Jasper and Lucinda found themselves in Philadelphia. A small diner caught the elder vampire's eye.
The mated couple stepped inside, escaping the rain, even just for half an hour.
Taking Lucinda's coat, Jasper hung it up on the coat rack. Taking his fiancée's hand, the pair walked over to the booth in the corner.
They sat next to each other, she was resting her head in his shoulder. They sat, no words exchanged. Listening to the surrounding talk, Lucinda learned that someone had given birth and someone didn't want any more coffee, even though it was cold.
Only a few minutes later, the cold coffee girl and the hooded man she sat next to walked, no strolled, over to the booth.
Sitting down together, the small girl small at the couple opposite her. Lucinda thought she looked like the pixie from one of her childhood picture books.
"Hi, I'm Alice and you are Jasper and Luci." The girl said casually as if they were acquainted long ago.
Lucinda glared at the other girl, she was rarely called anything other than her Christian name. It was even rarer for a complete stranger to give her a completely new one like 'Luci'
"Calm down Firestarter," Jasper murmurs into Lucinda's ear. She earned this nickname the night of their escape. She cuddled closer to her mate.
The hooded man kept looking at Lucinda, as of they were familiars. You see, he did not remember much of his human life. Only flashes and words, here and there. Never certain.
He could make out small features from the blurs. Somedays he would remember a flower, usually a sunflower outside of a house and the girl's eyes. It was uncanny how similar the memories were to the girl before him. The only difference being the memories held the bluest eyes and Lucinda's were red.
This memory of him and the blur ran through William's head. He couldn't put his finger on how he knew this girl, but he knew that she always holds her umbrella in her right hand.
"Oh, I'm sorry. It's just we don't know you, ma'am." Jasper said.
"Don't be. I see glimpses, pieces of the future based upon current decisions," Alice replied, clearing up any past confusion.
"Like your emotions sensory and your manipulation," William said, entering the conversation, "I can detect gifts in vampires. Useful in some occasions-"
"Threatening in others." Lucinda finished, remembering then word being said to her before she met the supernatural. Looking up, William took off his hood, shocking both Jasper and Lucinda, "Will?"
"Luce? No. What are you doing here? You should be dead. You're dead."
"I have been, for years now." Lucinda smiled at her old best friend as if the last years had not occurred. As if it was back in 1866.
"Well we must be off, we can help you hunt in a new way," Alice said as she stood, wrapping her scarf tightly around herself, "if you want, that is."
Lucinda and Jasper soared a glance at each, as if to say 'is she serious.' But the pair was up for an adventure and they were well beyond prepared in case the newcomers turned against them. So they agreed, ready to start a new chapter in their immortal lives.
