Chapter One:

Simply not worth the time to live in.

1866

There is limited evidence for the existence of the supernatural, especially in Texas in the 1880s. The townsfolk would deem you absolutely bonkers with a few screws loose. And that was the case for Lucinda Hill, an avid disciple of the otherworldly.

She was the talk of the town, the girl who didn't follow the expectations set for her. Despite coming from a wealthy, well-respected family, she danced around the town, in her own little world.

The clerks in the local businesses were very wary of her. Most would turn away from the girl as she purchased their wares. She tried not to take notice of the whispers and the glances she gathered, but nobody could ignore it forever, no matter how hard they tried too.

Exiting the local greengrocers with the punnet of fresh fruit in hand, Lucinda turned away from the townsfolk and made her way towards the road out of town. Ever since she was little, Lucinda had taken a walk through the corn fields with William Tancredi, the only person who was more outcasted than her. He had moved into town shortly after her parents had disappeared. That, combined with a foreign family name, had led to his only friend being Lucinda.

Jasper Whitlock has been a vampire, a cold one, a creature of the night for over three years now. He and his supposed mate, Maria,  have been controlling the Mexican Coven for a while now, becoming a powerhouse for warriors and territory. He thought he was truly and utterly in love with her, and thought that she was the same with him. She and her armies won every fight and that was because of her lucky charm, the Major who went missing during an evacuation.

The pair were nearing the town when the scent of two isolated humans caught their attention. Their hunt for potential newborns had been slow at best; it was almost as if fate had brought the pair to them to aid their cause.

"I will change them, Jasper. Just make sure that they don't run." Maria said before she darted towards them. Biting into William's wrist, Maria savoured the taste of blood as it pooled into her mouth.

Not a second passed after Maria moved did Jasper follow, taking Lucinda into his arms to make sure she didn't move. Her scent was stronger now that she was pressed into his chest, so much so that he had to hold his breath in order to resist his urges. Or that's what he told himself, but he wasn't so sure of that thought as he watch Maria toss William aside and lunge for Lucinda.
