Chapter Thirty-Five:
Vervain

"Lucinda, we need to talk, " Alice said as she came skipping into the room. The vase of roses she was carrying was placed on the mantle.

Not even looking up from her book, Luci sighed, "What is so dire that you need me to help you, Alice, " she said, sarcasm dripping from her tongue. Alice's smile dropped ever so slightly as Rosalie's smirk grew a tad. Placing down her book, she stood up and walked over to Alice.

"I forgot to get the wildflowers in the woods, can you go get some for me?" Alice asked, giving Lucinda the puppy-dog eyes that she knew made Lucinda as weak as a kitten when it comes to wills and ways. Sighing, Luci put on a jacket in case az human saw her and stormed out of the house with a huff and a muttered 'fine.'

Alice's smile was replanted on her face as Rosalie sent her a quizzical glance before returning to her nail. Skipping out of the room, Alice returned to her task of preparing the guest bedroom.

The grass was crisp as Lucinda slowly walked across it. She decided to take her time with the retrieval of the flowers Alice desperately needed. The brunette was unsure of the need for vervain.

Apparently, old ones like the guest Carlisle went to pick up from the airport, saw vervain as a token of the weakness for the 'new' generation of vampires and the ways they are portrayed in their legends. Even though the vervain was rumoured to harm vampires that evolved from the cold ones, Nadine knew that the rumour is true, she witnessed the first 'new' generation of vampires being 'created.'

Lucinda thought it was complete and utter bollocks as how can a vampire be repelled by a flower, it was like the garlic debate all over again. However, today she didn't feel like arguing with Alice, especially since this retrieval trip let her have some time to think and reflect upon her decisions of late.

As she grew nearer the place where the flowers grow, the sound of water rushing down the stream grew louder. Lucinda changed her path and walked towards the source of the noise, getting the want to paddle her feet for a minute.

As she left the tree line, she saw an outline of a person, of course, it isn't any person and it didn't take Lucinda more than half a second to identify who it was standing there. She had got their scent a mile back but she decided not to comment as she sat next to them.

"You know you can't be here right," she said softly as if scared to deserve them.

"I'm sorry," he replied, knowing that comment would come sooner or later, "I couldn't resist. You know that. Anyway, how long has it been since we sat by a river?"

Sighing softly, she thought back to the day she last did this with him. "Too long. How have you been?"

    "Lonely."

"Don't give me that!" Lucinda laughed at his attempt of a guilt trip, "seriously. I do care still. It's not like I act like we didn't have good times together."

    "I've been fine, Luci."

They sat watching the water race by, in a silence that wasn't awkward but was comfortable and natural.

"I was incredibly lonely without you," he said, looking directly at her for the first time since she arrived.

"Oh. I did what I had to do,"

    "You died,"

    "You didn't."
