Chapter Seventeen:
I won, fair and squareLoath is a strong word, one of which the usually lighthearted, easygoing, small-town girl, Lucinda was always reluctant to use but for this torture that she had to suffer through, she loathed it.
The suffering always hindered her happiness and without fail, always made her skin crawl. Lucinda loathed the mandatory class of biology. To the brunette, the subject was mind-numbingly boring. Her opinions on the subject ran deep, never changing. It didn't help that she thought her neighbour in this class, Angela Webber, was a kiss-arse.
She believed that biology undermined the credibility that the human body deserved: it could reproduce, can survive of food and most importantly, it can die.
If Lucinda could find any chance she may possibly distract herself, she would take. And today's entertainment was the best she could get, it was New Girl versus Vampire.
Quickly, she texted Emmett on what was happening, not being able to contain her giggles when he made it into a bet. Twenty dollars were riding on this. Emmett had taken the optimistic route and thought that they would get along swimmingly. Lucinda thought otherwise.
"Miss Hill?" Mr Molina, the teacher Lucinda despised, called from the front of the room. Giving him the attention he wanted, she raised her head, making eye contact, "As you seem so content with what is happening on your lap, you would know what we were discussing. What is prophase?"
"Prophase, correct me if I'm wrong, is the first stage of cell division. Also, during which the chromosomes become visible as paired chromatids," Lucinda replied, reciting the information that she had learned countless times during her seemingly endless horrific biology lessons. Mr Molina's smirk dropped as she had perfectly, word for word, given the correct definition and then add to the mandatory curriculum.
Edward turned to look at his adoptive sister in awe. He was amazed that his 'Little Lucie' actually listened to at least one of her biology teachers. Lucinda in all of her smugness whispered to Edward, knowing that he would hear her with his supernatural hearing, to 'keep up' as well as the nickname that he had never taken a liking towards.
It was clear to her that Edward had been blocking out Bella the entire lesson. Lucinda could see why her blood was smelled just divine. Control, especially since returning, was Lucinda's forte. She felt no tempt to feed of the new girl. Edward, however, seemed to be struggling.
Riiiiiinnnnngggg... He shot out of his seat the second the final bell rung. Laughing to herself, Lucinda stood up, gathering her things and walked over to Isabella.
"Don't take it personal," she said, making the human jump. Bella looked up, absorbing the girl stood in front of her. She compared the vampire to the goddess Aphrodite in her mind, "Lucinda Hill, Edwards sister."
And with that, she left the classroom, leaving the klutzy human even more confused with the strange family and wondering if her company was so bad that she could repulse someone without a single word exchanged between them.
Walking over to the red convertible, Emmett looked towards his sister with a hopeful smile. With a shake of her head, he groaned, passing over a twenty dollar bill.
