Chapter Twenty-Four:
I see fire

I see fire, a song which is loved by many. A melody which is caught upon and never lost in a void of thoughts. The song which Lucinda first learnt how to dance to play in the faded red truck. Lucinda's light singing was drowned out by Edward and Bella's argument over which they were discussing.

'Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
Keep careful watch of my brothers' souls'

Bella knew that she should get Charlie away from James' wrath but Edward knew the delay could be death coming closer and closer to his beloved. The argumentative atmosphere was choking the brunette vampire.

'And should the sky
be filled with fire and smoke'

"If I don't leave now, I never will," Bella screamed as she spat back the words her mother broke her father's heart in.

'Keep watching over my own son'

Climbing into her faded red truck, she pulled out of her driveway with the two Cullen's climbing in as soon as the first corner was turned.

'If this is to end in fire'

Laurent had arrived at the Cullen's safe haven to warn them if James' games. Telling them of his cunning ways. Warning them of his tracking.

'Then we should all burn together'

Taking his leave quickly, the coven reformed in the garage, deciding to send Bella to Arizona with William, Alice and Jasper as her protection. This decision leaving two pairs of mates separated and only three feeling the full effect of the mating bind drawing them together.

'Watch the flames climb high into the night'

Heading out into the forest, Lucinda and Rosalie were dressed in the human's clothing, hoping to be a diversion for the two hunters who wanted to purge the young Isabella's life.

'Watch the flames burn on and on the mountainside'

Even though being on different sides if the country, Lucinda and Jasper simultaneously crippled in pain, reminiscent of when they were split.

'And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time'

Lucinda was very aware of the consequences in which one mistake to lead to Bella perishing in the most brutal way possible. That is why she was glad that before she left, she whispered her intentions in Edwards ear.

'Calling out for the rope
Prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn on and on the mountain side'

And that is what Jasper loved about Lucinda: when she gave her word, she never broke it. So when she promised Edward what she did, he knew he soulmate would survive this night and many to come.

'Desolation comes upon the sky'

    Victoria was smart, smart enough to not fall for the Cullen's wild goose chase. She fled for the school, passing Bella's home information onto James who was arriving in Arizona, waiting to set up his final trick.

'Now I see fire, inside the mountain

And I see fire, blood in the breeze
And I hope that you'll remember me'

    The flight to Phoenix was tedious, Edward fidgeting, Carlisle calming Esme as Emmett calmed Rosalie, leaving Lucinda to her thoughts being laid out on cheap airport paper with a blue, scratchy pen.

'Oh, should my people fall
Then surely I'll do the same'

Edward was furious when he read Bella's note, knowing that she would risk her sould for a creature who feeds off them to survive. He knew that she couldn't stand against the enhaned being for more than a few seconds so they ran. Edward and the girl who promised his loves life before her ahead of the others.

'Confined in mountain halls
We got too close to the flame

Desolation comes upon the sky'

    Bella's screames filled the ballet studio as the firey venom overtook her thoughts, making her delusional and even less able to defend herself. Edward rushed to her side, aiding his mate.

'Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
And I see fire, hollowing souls'

    Carlisle and their coven arrived shortly after. Carlisle, Alice and Esme help Bella before the females had to get away from the blood. Emmett and William started a fire, leaving Lucinda fight James as they aided Bella as well.

'And I see fire, blood in the breeze
And I hope that you'll remember me'

    Jasper stayed clear of the studio, knowing that the blood would be too much, even a drop could send him into a frenzy. Although he never thought of the outcome of that night to be what it is.

'And if the night is burning
I will cover my eyes
For if the dark returns then
My brothers will die'

    Lucinda locked eyes with James.

'And as the sky's falling down
It crashed into this lonely town
And with that shadow upon the ground
I hear my people screaming out'

    She lunged at him as the fire roared behind them. The cries of the Cullen coven growing weaker to her.

'Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
And I see fire, hollowing souls
And I see fire, blood in the breeze'

    No-one could win that fight. For what James had in strength, Lucinda made up im agility and launching sticks if fire at him, her gift finally being useful.

'I see fire, oh you know I saw a city burning
And I see fire, feel the heat upon my skin
And I see fire'

    Seeing one way out, Lucinda grabbed James, pulling him along with her. She flung him and herself into the heat. Ripping his head off, she waited as the flames grew brighter around her.

'And I see fire.'

    Bright. Everything was bright, so bright it became dark and cold as the souls of the clumsy human and the broken vampire linked, ready to be broken.
