Chapter Nineteen:
Luminescent streetlights
A/N: Oml, woke up this morning to 1k reads, so here is an early chapter. (One will get published in the regular schedule after this)Lucinda had relaxed into the travelling role almost immediately, ignoring the ache in her chest which aimed to draw her back to Jasper. She had a week to do whatever her heart desired before she would return and at this very moment, her heart desired for her to belt out the lyrics to 'Jailhouse Rock' by Elvis.
She sang to distract herself on her travels before, so why wouldn't it work now? However, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't distract herself from the thought of Jasper sitting all alone, the same ache in his chest, waiting for her to return. Being away from him just felt inadequate.
"So where to, Eddie-Boy?" she asked her brother, shaking the thoughts away, fully aware of the fact that he was listening in. His Volvo sped up as the roads morphed into the country lanes, leaving the state of Idaho and crossing over to Montana.
"We will stay here for now," he paused as if he was waiting for the answers to spill out of his mouth instead of making them up himself. He glanced towards his sister before concentrating on his answer once more, barely paying any inclination to pay attention to the grass-covered roads ahead, "next we will presumably head up to Canada tomorrow for about two days. After that, we need to get you home before Jasper starts tracking us, no promises are being broken on my watch, not anytime soon. Got it?"
"Yeah," she replied shortly. Lucinda looked out of the window, focusing on the luminescence that the street lights project out into the night, "Edward? Promise me something."
"What is it?"
"Promise that if you don't drink from her, get to know her, or someone. And if you meet this someone do not, under any circumstances leave them, unless you are endangering them. The pain of leaving your heart behind is worse than a thousand hot knives piercing into your skin. It's worse than being drowned over and over and over. Trust me, it really isn't worth it."
"Why'd you leave Jasper then?" He questioned, his voice emotionless and cold as he was wondering if her view came from before or after her time alone.
"I was petrified of myself and my gift. It is so much more than levitation. I can raise greatly devastating fires from a spark, control tsunamis from a raindropq and hurricanes from a breeze. I am glad I discovered this when you, and our family, was out of harm's way. I couldn't bear it if you got hurt.
Edward hummed in reply, keeping his gaze on the road. Lucinda went back to watching the trees and greenery wiz past with the occasional luminescent streetlamp lighting the way forward into the city of Helena, the capital of Montanna.
