Chapter Ten:
Puzzle Pieces

September finally rolled around. Five months since Lucinda had left him. Five months of Jasper wondering 'what if.' What if she didn't leave? What if he realised that she was scared of herself? What if he understood? What if?

Jasper barely left his room. He couldn't bear to look at all the happy couples for more than five minutes without breaking down. He was empty without her, she was his missing puzzle piece.

Training was a distraction for Lucinda. She wanted to forget her problems but the way she did was to help others with theirs.

Lucinda found that helping others helped herself. Since April of that same year, she began extensive training of her power, learning that she could control objects as well as liquids and gases. And with every ability that she learned, the more fear grew inside of her.

"Again," Garrett said, he was getting Lucinda to make wind, but only a small breeze came from her on the still summers day.

"You try and fight in this dress," Lucinda offered to see his face go into an expression of horror. With a smirk, she began to try and control the bonfire in front of her, aiming dim it at best but wanting it to no longer exist.

Slowly but surely, the light began to fade. Not noticeably at first, but as fate would have it, she diminished the flames, leaving nothing bar a pile of dust.

Whispering, as if he would disturb her, in her ear, "Now raise it," as she tried to reverse the flames back to their original glory, "Come on," he coaxed, "Come on, Love, I know you can do it."

The nickname didn't go unnoticed, however, Lucinda thought it was a slip of the tongue. He couldn't like her, could he?

Over the last five months, Garrett the fearless, brooding, adventuring vampire had trained Lucinda, the girl who he had found a friend, companionship and a one-sided lobe in, to face her demons and learn control.

Every failure she had made him believe that she was stronger than before. Every time she broke down, he aimed to rebuild her, even though he didn't know why she was broken. And every victory she had, he knew that she deserved it. He hated to add to the stress of the already burdened girl, but only she held his heart and only she shall know about it.

Soon enough, nightfall came and Jasper looked out to the stars and the moon, finding comfort in the fact that somewhere, somehow, even though they seem miles apart, their bond ran deep within them making them always connected.

Jasper, being dominant in the relationship, could control the mating bond better than Lucinda could ever imagine of doing. He was the reason that she felt the lightest of tugs from being separated from her beloved as he took the burden of the pain so she could live relatively happy.

Nightfall is when Lucinda and Jasper were happiest. They needn't hide from the human as the diamond skin would disappear for a while, leaving them able to dance the night away.
