Chapter Twenty-Six:
Happy death day

The cheap airport paper was worn from being handled multiple times daily. The words written in the scratchy pen being read, analyzed, examined constantly. He was obsessed with the paper, with the words his lover last said to him.

He was forbidden by Alice to be locked away in his room this evening, reading the same words again and again because today was a day to celebrate apparently. Isabella Swan, the human who should be dead, is turning eighteen.

Of course, Jasper knows that Bella didn't know that Lucinda would sacrifice herself to save the human and yet, he can't help but resent the survivor when his mate could be alive- no should be alive. But that wasn't the case.

Just an hour ago, his hair was matted, clothes were torn and he looked dead. The environment he was in didn't help. He was in their room. The floor was laced with glass that he had thrown in grief.

Now his hair was somewhat tidy, fresh attire has been lazy draped on but he still looked dead. Instead of his ruined, memory filled bedroom, Jasper waited in the corner of the living room for Isabella Swan to arrive.

Lucinda Hill rested in her mahogany coffin, in the attic of the Cullen residence. It had been made a rule that nobody would be allowed into the highest floor anymore, especially Jasper.

His family knew that he would never be over the girl whole consumed his immortal life. She was his rock, his light, his everything.

Jasper, due to lack of motivation, had not hunted for weeks. So sitting in a room with a clumsy human is a recipe for disaster.

"Happy birthday Bella, everyone is down there," Alice squealed in excitement as she dashed into William's arms.

As the human unwrapped the silver gift, she slit her finger open. All eyes darted to Jasper as his primal instincts overtook him. He tried to lunge for the human, but was held back by his siblings.

"Calm down Jasper," Esme soothed before she realised that Edward, in a moment of panic, launched Bella behind him, away from Jasper into a glass table, "it's only a little... blood."

The boys, dragging Jasper out with them, escorted the girls into the garden leaving Carlisle to reverse that damage caused by the table.

"Why did she give her life for me?"

"I can only guess," Carlisle began, thinking back to a conversation he had with his currently dead daughter, "Lucinda always believed that this life was given to us to fix wrongs, or at least repay them in some way."

    "Like karma?"

"Essentially. Anyway, I assume she thought saving you from harm would balance her previous sins, thus letting her transcend from this life."

    "Was I worth it though?"

"To Edward: Yes. But to Jasper, is a completely different answer. He lost half of his soul, to someone who isn't the light of his life. He would pick Lucinda every time. As I would choose Esme, or Rosalie would choose Emmett. Soulmates are the foundation of who we are and what we become."

The night was cold and damp in Forks. The pair of mates, one alive and one not so much, looked out into the forest. One was not aware of the presence of the other as ghosts, or phantoms if we are being scientifically honest, were invisible to living beings.

She longed to comfort him, and he desired her touch. None of this was possible due to the realm barrier between them, only to be broken by the human link.

She had changed since she had last taken a breath of air. It became more noticeable as time passed. First, her eyes became glassy and distant. Secondly, she became doubtful that she would ever leave this realm. And finally, burn marks were laced all over her body, the venom inside her healing but not correcting the damage burdened upon her appearance and yet none of it mattered as no creature, living or undead could see her.
