Chapter Thirty-Three:
China dollTime had passed, and though they were together, Lucinda and Jasper were acting like strangers. They would chat but never talk. They would walk but never roam. They would smile and never mean it.
Carlisle had hoped an old friend would help, as she had had more heartbreak than most.
The house phone rung but nobody made a move to answer it until Alice danced down the stairs.
"Hello Andi," Alice spoke.
"Oh...um hi? I can't book the flight ticket... Can you book me one?"
"It's already done, I saw that you couldn't get one."
"Saw? Oh right, you can do that,"
"The plane leaves in an hour, hurry up. Oh and one more thing, red or purple?"
"Red, always red," Andi replied as she hung up. Sighing, Alice placed the phone back in the holder. Making a mental note, she skipped out of the room, avoiding Lucinda's curious glare.
Everyone had been awkward around Luci since she had returned, expecting her to collapse back into her comatose state, and honestly, it pissed her off. Why should she be treated like a piece of glass?
Storming out of the room, she snapped saying that she was "going for a walk" and slammed the door. Rushing up, Will followed her out.
"Where are you going?" He said as he went into the tree line, five paces behind her.
"Why does it matter?" She responded, walking faster.
"Because all of us agreed that-"
"'All of us?'" She stopped walking and turned to face her best friend, rage building in her eyes, "All including me or did you decide when I was hunting? Thought I missed that, well I didn't!"
"You died Lucinda," he growled.
"I am not a china doll, Will. I took a calculated decision, and guess what, BELLA IS ALIVE BECAUSE OF IT!"
Taking a calming breath, William walked towards her, "And you weren't, that is the point of this. We care about you,"
"I just want to have freedom. When I was human, I was trapped by my gender. For nearly seventy years, I was imprisoned. And even after that, my fear has had dictatorship over my every move-"
"Luci."
"No, let me finish, let's walk." Strolling through the woods, she resumed her point, "Now that I am back, knowing that my gift helped save a life, I don't fear it. I want my chance at freedom."
He didn't say anything, sometimes a gesture is better and that is what he went with. When he hugged her, she finally broke down. The weight of the world had finally broken down from where it was perched upon her shoulders for so very long.
It was gone twilight when they finally decided to head home. It was comforting, they hadn't been so relaxed with each other since the summer of 1862 when they swam in the river in Louisiana on a mini-vacation. She had finally realised life is worth living, especially since she had that best support system.
