Chapter Twenty-Three:
Baseball

A smashed bowl, a grumpy Rosalie and a disruptive Alice couldn't bring down Lucinda's mood as today, even though said disruptive human was joining them, they were playing baseball. As 'America's favourite pastime,' she had become accustomed to the sport on the television and had eventually, with much convincing from Esme, played and found out she had a great liking toward the game. Of course, this hobby could not have been picked up without the competitive attitude that became natural to Emmett has also become second nature to Lucinda.

The trip to the field was quick, excitement radiated off the boys and even Alice seemed to be in high spirits. Esme quietly talked to Rosalie, leaving Lucinda to her thoughts. Of course, Alice's predictions were right because as they headed out of town, the rain stopped, leaving the field dry as the thunder was getting ready to roll.

Bella and Edward eventually arrived on the playing field and with great timing too as Rosalie had started to snap. As Bella got directed to where Esme, William and Lucinda were talking, the players got into position with Lucinda being the last as apparently gossiping about an obnoxious class mate who shall not be named (Jessica *cough cough*) new flirting techniques.

And so the game started on Alice's cue, Emmett swinging first to collide into Edward. Esme smiled at her children, not seeing them as care free as they are now for a while now, especially because of the human she was explaining baseball too. Lucinda scoffed at this, how could a human in nowadays not get baseball!

But alas, the fun stopped as quickly as it started when the coven heard three supernaturally fast runners heading towards them.

"Put your hair down," Edward commanded of his human mate, pulling her behind him.

"Don't bother," Rosalie snapped back, "I could smell her across the field."

Edward snarled as Lucinda nodded in agreement. Gravitating toward her mate, Jasper shot her a worried glance before the both of them fell into militaristic stances with the only other survivor of the Mexican coven joining them.

Then they came, one by one. One blond, one redhead and the final, the leader, with black hair as dark as his eyes, "I believe this is yours."

Keeping eye contact, the nomad leader chucked the ball back to Carlisle who had taken one step towards the newcomers.

"I am Laurent and this is James and Victoria. Do you have room for a few more players?"

"I am Carlisle. This is Emmett, Rosalie and Esme," Carlisle said, gesturing to each of us as he continued down the list, "Alice, William. Edward and Bella. Thus leaving Lucinda and Jasper."

"A few of us were just leaving actually," Edward continued, stopping as a gust of wind ran through the Cullen's to the nomads, carrying Bella's overwhelmingly delicious scent with it.

"I see you brought a snack," James said, taking his eyes away from Alice for the first time, focusing on his next prey.

"The girl is with us," Carlisle shot back, denying their unspoken desire to have Bella. Edward grabbed Bella's hand, beginning to drag her away as William growled at the threat to his newest sister, "I think it is time to take our leave. Lets go."

As everyone left the field, Lucinda found time to look back to find James staring at their backs in deep thought and rage.
