You look down at your phone as you walk out the door to head for school, noticing you had a text from your childhood best friend.

Yui: Sorry Y/N-chan! I won't be able to walk with you today. So go on without me!

She won't be able to walk with me today...? What's she doing?

You wonder if she's okay and shoot her a text asking so, quickly shoving your phone in your coat pocket and heading down the sidewalk. Almost immediately you notice a familiar silhouette up ahead, one with spiky black hair and pointy ears. You feel your heart rate increase and you quicken your pace to catch up with him.

"Amajiki-kun!" You smile as you finally catch up to him, linking your arm with his.

"E-eh? Y/N? You scared me..."He mutters, keeping his hand in his pocket.

"Sorry, I couldn't help it. I don't normally see you on this route on the way to school, I got excited when I saw you!"You anxiously un-link your arms, wondering if it made him uncomfortable since he didn't return the action.

"It's okay Y/N-san. I was gonna walk with Yui-chan this morning...She lives on this road." He mutters, looking a little forlorn.

"Yui...chan?" You mutter, turning your gaze downwards.

"Y-yeah." He replies, expression only looking more and more forlorn as you approached Yui's house.

"You know what Amajiki? I actually forgot something so...I'll catch up with you guys later!" You quickly turn around and run the other direction, getting out of his sight as fast as possible.

Your heart felt heavy and you almost wanted to cry, but you had a bigger problem on your hands. You were definitely going to be late to school if you didn't find another route now.

So you ran to school in an opposite direction from Yui's house, crossing your fingers that you would somehow arrive there before they did. Your heart dropped as you neared the school and saw them walking into the gates together. You slowed your pace and trudged behind them, hoping they wouldn't notice you, but you soon realized that wouldn't be a problem. They were deep in conversation, and they were both smiling and laughing happily.

You felt your heart drop lower, if it was even possible, and fought back tears that were forming in your eyes. When did this develop...?

"Good MORNING YYYYY/NNNN CHAN!" You hear a familiar voice from behind you and feel a big arm link with yours.

"M-Mirio..."You choke out, stifling your sobs as you try to let the familiarity of your other best friend comfort you. You see Amajiki's ears noticeably perk up at the sound of your name...or maybe it was just Mirio's voice... but he doesn't turn his attention away from Yui.

"Why were you running from the opposite direction from your house Y/N?" He says cheerfully, but his question is answered as soon as he notices the two in front of you entering the school.

"I had to uh...run some errands and I was a little late." You mutter, walking alongside him as you entered the school behind the others. He knows this isn't the truth for sure though, and you realize that he's probably aware as his hand quickly finds yours and gives you a comforting squeeze.

"I see. Don't worry, Y/N-chan." You look up at him and he immediately notices the tears fighting against you.

"Y/N..." He brings you into his arms and squeezes you tightly. "Don't worry...it's probably not what you think. We've all walked together before, haven't we?" He says as you continue trying to stifle your sobs, but for some reason his comforting warmth made it harder. "I don't think it's the same Mirio..." You mutter, wiping your eyes and pulling away, pulling him along down the hall to head to class.

"This morning Yui texted me that she couldn't walk with me but I thought she was sick or something.I wish she would have just told me the truth..."You knew she probably knew how she felt. You also knew she was probably just trying to spare your feelings, but you were sure that if she had told you it would have hurt a little less and you could have prepared yourself more.

Mirio doesn't say anything else but keeps an arm around you and you lean into his side, accepting his support full-heartedly.

The rest of the day seems to go by painfully slowly, as Yui and Amajiki quickly learn to pay attention to mostly just each other. Lunch was the hardest, you couldn't even make yourself eat. Your stomach was in a painful knot the whole time and your heart felt like it was down there with it.

You head home before anybody else can join you, not that anybody would, since you were sure Amajiki and Yui would head home on their own anyway, and that was something you definitely didn't want to be a third wheel for.

After what seems like the longest walk home ever, you arrive at your destination and fall down on your bed, just wanting to fall asleep, but as you finally begin to relax, your peace is interrupted by a knocking at the door.

You slump off the bed and slowly open the door, heart dropping again as you see Amajiki is your visitor.

"Oh...Amajiki-kun. What are you here for?" You mutter, opening the door wider to invite him in.

"You seemed sad all day Y/N...I-I had planned on coming here later anyway but...I wanted to make sure you were okay...You didn't talk with us at all, you were only talking to Mirio." He mutters, as you take a seat at your dining room table.

"Oh...you were planning to come see me? Why?" You tilt your head in confusion, peaking up at him.

He blushes and fiddles with something in his pocket almost anxiously.

"I wanna know what was wrong first..." You turn your face downwards.

"Nothing, really..." You mutter.

"Why can you tell Mirio but not me?" He questions softly, still anxiously fidgeting around.

"It's really not a big deal I guess...Don't worry. Maybe it's just because I had to run to school, you know." He suddenly takes the seat in front of you and you look up at him again. He gulps and turns his eyes away, pulling a small box out from his pocket.

"I..I got you a present...I had to...Y-Yui helped me a little..."He mutters, holding the box out towards you. You notice his lip is trembling a little bit.

"A present? It's not my birthday or anything Amajiki. You didn't have to do that..." You take the box out of his hands and give his hand a comforting squeeze.

"I did it because...I...have feelings for you...Y/N... and I'm really bad at showing them I think...so I asked her to help me...butifyoudon'twannaacceptitbecauseyoudon'tfeelthesamewayoranythingthat'sokayIcantakeitbackoryoucankeepit-"

"Amajiki..."You mutter, feeling tears begin to stream out of your eyes.

"I have feelings for you too. I was so upset today because I thought you liked Yui." You sob out, throwing your arms around him. You feel him stiffen under your touch, but he slowly brings hesitant hands around your back.

"I-I'm sorry Y/N...It's not like that at all. I didn't mean t-to hurt you." You laugh through your tears, relief finally washing over you.

"Open the box...I know it's not a lot but I hope it can make up for the trouble I put you through..."You nod, pulling away. You open the box to reveal a silver necklace with a blue butterfly charm at the end. Parts of it glistened and sparkled if the light caught it just right. You feel tears bursting forth again, this time from happiness.

"I love it, Amajiki."

"I love y-you...Y/N..."
