Alex had a crush on the boy next door.

The boy's name was Thomas. He had great looks. Just take the looks of your favorite person (except with dark brown eyes, poofy hair, and a gorgeous body) and that's Thomas for you. Alex loved him. He loved everything about him. Through the few conversations that they did have, Alex loved his funny, loud personality. He found it cute that he challenged him with his own beliefs. Alex loved Thomas.

Here's a sample of one conversation;

Alex walked out his apartment, shaking. It was his birthday and he knew well that during his birthday, he always got scared. His roommate, John Laurens, had already scared him by inviting their friends over. Alex screamed at the thought of social interaction but gave in for the morning. Until now, when it was time for Alex to go to work.

"Alex!" A familiar voice rang in Alex's ears and he spun around.

"Thomas." He nodded and looking straight ahead, at Thomas's chest. Yup, Alex was that small compared to Thomas.

"Happy birthday." Thomas smiled, even though Alex couldn't tell.

The two looked at each other awkwardly.

"Yeah, I have to-"

"My-"

"You first." Alex looked up and smiled, somehow concealing his feelings for Thomas behind a regular-colored face.

"Um, work." Thomas said and walked away, fast.

Alex nodded and smiled to himself, 'God Thomas is cute.'

See? They had great, perfectly normal conversations.

Alex was under the impression Thomas liked him. Even with the few social interactions they had, Alex knew he liked him back. He had told all his friends about Thomas, the boy next door.

"Truth or dare, Alex?" Herc looked at Alex, smirking. Herc's favorite truth question was regarding the person's crush. His favorite dare was to ask the person to kiss the one to their left. He did the dare one once to Laf. He was sitting on his left. It was beautiful.

"Um... Truth." Alex was sitting next to the quiet Burr. He got the shivers thinking about kissing him. And not the good kind. He felt like throwing up.

"Who's your crush, Alex?" Herc smiled. Alex sighed, knowing that was coming.

"Uh..." Alex muttered a name.

"Louder!" Yelled someone behind them. Alex looked back and saw Jenna Roland, the apartment building gossip. He glared at her.

"Thomas." He whispered. The ever quiet Burr heard.

"It's Thomas, everyone!" He screamed, standing up and waving his arms. Everyone began to squeal and make up ship names. Yeah, right. "The ever quiet Burr." Sure.

"I hate you." Alex whispered again, also loud enough for only Burr to hear.

"He hates me!" Burr stood and screamed again, then sat down.

Really, Alex's love for Thomas was something everybody knew about. Except Thomas. Or maybe he did.

Anyway, today Alex was going to face his fear of talking to Thomas about his feelings and just do it. He was going to do it. He wasn't that scared of rejection. He had faced rejection before. When he asked that girl in middle school on a date... She had said they were too young. Yeah, Alex had faced rejection.

He got out of bed at 5:30 AM, feeling happy, tired, sleep deprived, and nervous. A mix of one good emotions and many terrible ones. But Alex knew he would feel better once Thomas accepted their love and they got married and adopted kids and died together. He would only feel fully happy then.

"Hey, Alex." John waved to Alex as he emerged from the hallway, rubbing his eyes. He was watching TV on the couch.

"Hey, John. Why are you up so early?"

"You woke up early, too. Your alarm clock woke me up." John rubbed his eyes, like Alex had done before.

"Oops. Well, this morning I'm going to ask Thomas out." Alex announced proudly, even though John hadn't asked.

"Are you sure?" John looked at Alex, the expression of a worried friend covering his face.

"Yeah," Alex said. He walked over to the kitchen and began to make pancakes for John and him. He felt bad about having waken him up, "What could go wrong?"

Alex got ready in the bathroom as he sung a showtune from Heathers. He wore wore regular, casual clothes. He wore regular clothes the first day he had met Thomas, so Thomas must have fallen in love with him when he wore regular clothes. Nothing formal.

Alex's alarm went off. Thomas was going to leave his apartment in five minutes.

"This is it!" Alex practically yelled. From above, someone stomped on their floor. Probably Jared. He was a strange guy, but had many friends who referred to him as being insanely cool.

"Are you sure, Alex?" John got up and walked over to Alexander.

"Yeah. Why?"

"I don't want you-"

"Oh my god! Are you jealous?" Alex smiled.

"No!" John rolled his eyes and walked Alex to the door, "I guess go get 'em buddy..." His voice trailed off and he walked away fast.

"Weird." Alex whispered to himself and opened the door.

~~~
Thomas's door opened at the same time. Alex looked down. It was more thrown open, actually. It stayed like that for a moment before Alex saw Thomas's shoes stumble out.
"Mmm... Jemmy, not now." Alex's head snapped up.
Thomas Jefferson.
Was.
Kissing.
No.
Making out with.
James Madison.
James looked behind him at Alex. Alex's heart was slowly being ripped apart. He was watching as it burned in his chest. Thomas... The boy he had a crush on, who he thought had a crush on him... making out with James Madison.
Thomas did not love him.
"No homo, Thomas." Madison hopped off Thomas and walked down the hall.
"I hate you." Alex growled and threw open the door to John and Alex's apartment.
