Alex mumbled something incoherently on the coach across from me, turning on the TV. I look up from my phone and groan at the sight of the preseident (me too).

"Do we have to watch this right now?" I ask Alex.

"Yes! Don't you want to know when it happens?" He mutters the word 'it' as if the word is forbidden and shouldn't be said. Honestly, I wish our president had never said it or brought it up at all. Honestly, I wish the entire county wasn't forced to do a purge.

"I guess." I say back, going back to my phone.

A few minutes later, I hear Alex gasp softly. I look at the TV. Our president haa gotten onto the podium and is counting down on live TV.

"Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one!" He screams, "The Purge is beginning now!"

I feel like the world stops for a moment, it's such a stupid thing. No one in the country does anything for a full moment. Then, the chaos starts. Alex and I go to NYU (mY dReAm sChoOl). So granted, you can hear the gunshots break out all around New York City.

It's scary.

People are screaming and yelling, sirens are wailing (although ambulances have been told not to help people), and gunshots are heard. I look over at Alex. He looks scared out of his mind. His face is buried in his hands and that's when I hear the rain.

Oh.

Why does it have to rain on this day? Rain any other day! Just not the day we're in the middle of a purge and my roommate is scared of rain! God.

"Alex?" I say frantically, crawling over to his coach. He's whispering random things about his family. I frown and turn off the TV, which was all full of static. I imagine the cameraperson got shot or they just decided to get inside before they all died.

There are many people who want to kill them.

Anyway, I pull Alex into a hug, resting my head on his head and that's the moment when the first gunshot near me is heard. A bullet races through our window, breaking through the glass and landing a hole in our wall as it races through the dorms.

That's what snaps Alex out of his state of fear, but it also makes us both quite scared.

"Oh, god," He says to me, pulling away. I watch as he crawls to the window and looks over it. I'm not thinking at all when he turns back around and begins to talk, "There's a guy with a gun-"

A bullet races towards our window, shooting Alex in the head.

~~~
"Alexander!" I scream, rushing towards his twitching figure on the floor. He lets out a cry as I get towards him. I remember what our president said.
"If you get shoot, no one can help you."
"Alex!" I scream again, looking at his bullet wound. Alexander's breathing continues to grow slowier and when it does breathe, it's like he's taking a large gasp of breath so he can hold his for a while. His pulse is already slowing down and blood is everywhere.
"Alex." I mumble. Tears are beginning to pour down both our faces and he speaks some of his last words.
"I'll miss yo-you." Alex whispers, trying to lift his hand to wipe away my tears.
"God dammit, now I'll never get to tell you." I respond, placing my head on his chest and listening to his heart as it dies down. I feel his hands reach up weakly and touch my neck, giving me a half hug.
"Tel-tell me wa-what?"
"Aw, fuck it," I mutter to myself, sitting up and kissing him on the lips, "That I love you."
Alex kisses back. I get away as fast as I can though so he can still breathe, but it's too late. He doesn't even mutter a response back to my kiss as his arm around my neck falls to the ground. He takes his final breath, looking at me, and dies in my arms.
