It's me again God,
I've just been reflecting on the rhythm of life we all share as humans. Each day comes and goes so quickly from the rising of the sun until it sets again. No matter what I do between these events, I am sure to stop and eat at least three times throughout the day. Apart from it being necessary for my survival, eating is part of the rhythm you established for us. It's often something we share in community with one or more people and it's often an important time of fellowship and connection.
It's no accident that celebrations are usually centred around meals. There's something deeply gratifying about eating! You made us in a way to enjoy the experience and to be able to recall and remember important life events and milestones, commemorated with the sharing of a meal.
I wasn't there for the most remembered meal in history. I hadn't been born and yet the most incredible thing was that my life would be changed forever by the significance of the simple meal that was shared by Jesus on the night he would be betrayed and handed over to be crucified.
"Jesus said, "I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I won't eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God." Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come." He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." After supper he took another cup of wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you."
Luke 22:15-20 NLTJesus Your words during this meal have reverberated through time and the simple elements of bread and wine have become so precious to those who would follow after You. They signified a turning point, a new covenant, promise or agreement which would stand for all time and for all people. You spoke of a new covenant that would change everything and while your disciples would have initially been confused, all would be clear after You gave Yourself —the perfect, unblemished sacrificial lamb, taking away the sin of the world!
Thank You for all that You have done in taking my sin and bearing the punishment that was due to me. Thank You that as I believed and received You as my Lord and Saviour, I was adopted into Your family and I can come to my Heavenly Father anytime in prayer, knowing I will be with Him forever. Thank You for the amazing restoration that has been made possible because You loved us!
You gave us this simple meal to share and remember the agreement between God and man so we could partake in it and know our sins are forgiven! Thank You for the victory we have because You came Jesus!
".... he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God's paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all."
Isaiah 53:5-6 NLTForgiveness and healing is mine through the new covenant and so I remember today and receive all the blessings of Your sacrifice. I gladly share in this special meal and know that I am loved!
"For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again."
1 Corinthians 11:26 NLTHelp me to remember today that it was never Your intention for us to be separated from You by sin. You wanted us to be whole in every way and so I claim all the benefits of Your sacrifice and thank You for this wonderful, Good News I have to share with all I know!
Until You come again,
Amen.
