chapter twenty-five; real life

October 12, 2020

"It appears I can't find a heartbeat."

My heart stops.

I knew this was going to happen.

Why me?

Why Reece?

He doesn't deserve this.

I look over at Reece, who had tears in his eyes.

Dr Cross keeps on looking, but I can see that she's about to give up.

She sighs, pressing harder in one area.

And that's when we heard it.

The sound of a rapid beating fills the room, and I could see Reece perk up at the sound of it from the corner of my eye.

She turns the screen towards us, and I look at it in awe.

"There's your baby. It's healthy, growing just perfectly."

"That's our baby." He kisses my forehead, and that's when the tears fall.

"Oh my god."

I smile and look over at Reece, relief flooding through me, as well as happiness.

"Why did it take so long to find the heartbeat?" He questions, sounding worried.

"It looks like your wife has a retroverted uterus."

"A what now?" I look over at the screen, not seeing anything unusual.

"In most women, the uterus in angled slightly to the front, just over their bladder. A retroverted uterus tilts backwards instead. It happens every now and then."

"So it's not bad?"

"No. It won't cause anything harm to you nor the baby, this just means that it's going to take you a little bit longer to start showing. You probably won't be as big as other people are towards the end of your pregnancy either."

"Oh."

"You'll still have all of the exact same symptoms as any other woman. You wanna know a plus of having a retroverted uterus?"

"Sure?"

"The baby won't press on your bladder as much."

I smile. "Thank god. My friend Mia was pregnant not too long ago and she had to pee like every twenty minutes."

She nods. "Have you had any morning sickness?"

"A little bit. It didn't really hit me until we were on our honeymoon, but it only happened two or three times."

"And since you've been back?"

"Nothing."

"Lucky for you."

"Watch me jinx it though."

"Let's hope not." Reece mutters.

"So, how far along am I?"

"You're about ten weeks, which means you're in your third month. Your due date should be around the eleventh of April."

"I'm already that far?"

"That's why I was asking about the morning sickness. It said in your chart that you've only known for a little under a month."

"I found out on our wedding day."

She smiles. "What a wonderful surprise."

"Yea. Reece was over the moon when I told him."

"Shall I print you pictures?"

"Yea, but you're probably going to need to get a lot. We have a lot of family and friends who I guarantee are going to want one."

She chuckles, grabbing a small notepad and writing on it. "It's always like that the first time around. Hand this to the lady at the front desk, and she'll set your next appointment up. I'll give you two a minute."

"Thank you."

She nods, walking out of the examination room, the chart tucked under her arm.

"We're having a baby." Reece says, making me laugh.

"We've known that for a month Reece."

"But it didn't feel real up until now."

I grab one of the tissues and wipe off the gel.

"Especially not until she said that you were three months along. Three!"

I chuckle. "Crazy, huh?"

"No kidding. You didn't have any symptoms before that night?"

"No. You were next to me the entire time. Nothing was off about me."

"Besides you being tired all the time."

"I just figured it was because we were constantly chasing Luna around and putting last minute details into the wedding. You were tired too."

"But nowhere near as bad as you."

I sit up, sighing. "I was so scared, Reece."

"About what?"

"When... When she said she couldn't find the heartbeat. I literally felt my heart drop."

"Yea, same." His voice is quiet, his smile dropping.

"But we don't need to worry about that now. The baby is healthy. That's all that matters."

"That's all."

"Now let's talk about moving." I say, standing up and walking to the door.

"What? Why? I thought we already did."

"But we didn't come up with an answer, and we need to think about it before it's too late. I won't be able to lift things up for much longer."

"You aren't supposed to lift anything at all."

"Shut it, Bibby."

"Don't tell me what to do, Bibby"
