chapter forty-eight; real life

August 11, 2021

I walk through the airport, sighing at how many I've been to in the past few hours. We had multiple connecting flights, and it wasn't fun.

I was extremely jet lagged.

There was another baby on the plane, who wound up screaming the entire time. This only made Hunter begin to cry.

And when he gets going, he does not stop. Both babies had gone back and forth between crying and not crying, and at some point I had to move up to the front of the plane and the other family had to move to the back.

It was a disaster because people kept looking at me like it was my fault for Hunter crying.

And after those first few looks, I felt like a terrible mom.

Who brings a four month old baby on a plane? The change in air pressure has got to do more to his sensitive ears than mine.

I'm used to it at this point.

Hunter is definitely not.

I walk away from the conveyor belt, struggling to hold my suitcase, my purse, Hunter, his diaper bag, and his carrier.

Hunter was refusing to get in his carrier. Every time I would set him down in it he would begin screaming at the top of his lungs.

Which only made me feel even worse.

"You look like you need some help."

I turn around, staring at the person behind me.

"Here, let me."

He grabs the suitcase and baby carrier out of my hands.

"What about your things?"

"I'm just waiting on my sister to get off the plane. I have nothing with me."

"Oh."

"I have a few minutes until then, so-"

"Leah!"

I look over to the entrance, smiling when I see Olivia. She was walking towards me, a huge smile on her face.

"You ready to see Reece?" She asks, carefully taking Hunter from my arms. He had begun to fall asleep at this point, and I was glad Olivia took him. My arms were falling asleep big time.

"Is that even a question?"

"Not really." She looks over. "Who's this?"

"I'm Ryan. She was struggling to carry everything so I helped."

He looks down at his watch.

"I better go. I don't want my sister flipping out on me and saying I wasn't there."

"Thank you." I say, smiling at him.

"Anything for a gorgeous woman in need."

I feel my eyes widen. "I'm married."

"I saw the ring. I don't mind."

"Well I do. I'm definitely not going to do anything with you. Goodbye."

"I'll look forward to seeing you again."

"In your dreams."

He winks before walking away from me, making my jaw drop.

"He did not just-"

"What an ass!"

I sigh, grabbing my suitcase while Olivia grabs the carrier.

"What's this?" She grabs a piece of paper out of the front pouch of my suitcase, which just had to have this guy's number

"Throw it away. I'm not interested."

"Not even a little bit?" She jokes, making me roll my eyes.

"Maybe before I met Reece, but definitely not now."

She smiles. "Good because if you two ever broke up I think I would die."

"Olivia!"

"I'm serious! You guys are too cute!"

"We're not breaking up anytime soon."

"Good."

I chuckle, walking outside.

"There's the rental car. Blake is driving."

"And he didn't come in to say hi?"

She chuckles. "You know why."

"I was worried people were going to surround me and Hunter but luckily that hasn't happened yet."

"It's an airport, and it's 7 in the morning. Not many people are here at this time."

"Besides guys who see your wedding ring and suggest cheating on your husband."

"Yea, that's a bit stupid. You should've slapped him or something."

"Well I kinda couldn't unless I wanted to wake Hunter."

"Never wake a sleeping baby." Blake says, getting out of the car and smiling at us.

"That's like the first rule of parenting."

"Other than to not accidentally kill your baby or something like that." Olivia says flatly.

"That sentence did not go where I thought it was." Blake says, shaking his head.

We get to the back of the car, and Blake helps with putting the suitcase in the trunk while I start strapping in the car seat.

"Okay. You can put him in now."

Olivia nods, slowly setting him down so he doesn't wake up.

But the second he touches the seat he starts screaming.

She pulls him away from the seat, but he still cries. "What did I do?"

"Nothing, he just hates not being in someone's arms. You can still put him in there."

She nods, hesitantly placing him in the seat as the cries get worse.

"Is he going to be crying the entire drive to the venue?" Blake asks. "I've never driven with a crying baby in the backseat so I don't know if it's hard."

"I would say it is."

"Oh. Great."

"But he needs to eat, which I can't do at the moment."

I grab a pacifier out of the diaper bag, putting it in Hunter's mouth. He continues crying for a minute, but he soon stops.

"Okay, now we should hurry before he starts crying again or we're never going to leave the parking lot."

ugh school started again and I'm not happy

but I get to see my friends so that's a plus
