chapter thirty-six; real life

April 5th, 2021

I smile over at Reece as he stares at Hunter, who was born last night. Reece hadn't left the side of the bed unless he had to use to bathroom or went to get us food.

"Can we come in?"

Lexi's head pops into view, and Reece nods. She comes in, looking over at me and then to Hunter. Reece's parents walk in a moment later, gasping when they see Reece holding Hunter.

"Can I hold him?" Lexi asks.

"No, you'll drop him."

"Reece! Let her hold him." I say. "She is his aunt after all."

He sighs, gently passing Hunter over to her.

"I swear to god if you drop my son-"

"I'm not going to drop him. I've held babies before."

"Not a newborn!"

"Reece, stop. He's going to wake up if you talk any louder." I say

"Right. Sorry."

"What's his name?" Jamie asks once the others arrived.

Unfortunately, Connor and the rest of the Vamps weren't here due to them being on a festival run without James, who was currently in Australia. Neither was Emily, and I was still sad she had left to go back to America. George wasn't here either, but nobody was sure why. He told Blake that he had something to take care of before he got here.

"Hunter Jamie."

"Aww, you kept your middle name." Lexi says.

"Well, we did it because it's Dad's name, and he's always the one that pushed me to pursue my dreams. He was the one who suggested X-Factor. I wouldn't be where I am if it weren't for him. I probably wouldn't even have Hunter because I wouldn't know Leanna."

"What?" Jamie looks over at Reece. "You really did that?"

"Of course I did Dad."

Jamie walks over, wrapping his arms around Reece.

"Dad, stop crying."

"I'm not crying."

"I literally feel a wet spot on my shoulder."

Jamie lets go of Reece, wiping the tears under his eyes.

I stand up, ignoring how painful it is.

"Leanna, the doctor said not to stand." Reece says, walking over to me to help me back on the bed.

"I can stand up long enough to hug people."

I wrap my arms around Jamie.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For having the best thing that's ever happened to me." I say, looking over at Reece. "Same goes for you Lyndsey."

They both smile.

"Leah, have you gone soft?" Olivia jokes.

"What? I don't know what you're talking about."

The door opens up, Dr Cross walking in.

"You're not supposed to be up."

"Sorry."

"That's a good sign."

"It is? But you told me that I shouldn't-"

"Which means that both you and Hunter can go home. His tests came back, and he's perfect."

"Really?"

She nods. "I'll get you the discharge papers."

I look over at Reece, who had a wide smile.

"We get to go home?"

I nod, walking over to Lexi and taking Hunter.

"Can you hand me his outfit?"

Reece nods, opening up the bag and handing me the outfit and blanket.

"I'm going to go sign the papers." He says before walking out.

I quickly change Hunter, wrapping him up in the blanket. He fussed a little bit, but the moment I wrapped the blanket around him he calmed down.

"Does anyone else want to hold him before we leave?"

Olivia looks over at Blake. "He does, but he's scared to."

"I've never held a baby!"

I laugh, passing Hunter off to Olivia, who holds him for a few minutes before going to pass him to Blake, who shakes his head.

"I don't-"

"You're not going to drop him." I say. "If I trust you to hold him then you're good."

"Okay..."

Hunter is passed to him, and when that happens, Blake giggles nervously.

"I'm holding a baby."

"You are."

"And I haven't dropped him."

"No you haven't."

"Yet." Olivia adds, a smirk on her face.

"Yet? Don't say that!" He says. "Take him!"

He walks over to me, and I take Hunter from his arms.

"You didn't have to freak out so much." Olivia says.

"Shut it. I'm mad at you."

"Because I said one word?"

"You made me think I was going to drop him!"

"It was a joke!"

He smirks. "You know I wasn't really mad, right?"

She rolls her eyes. "I hate your guts."

"You love my guts."

"Okay, maybe."
