chapter thirty-three; real life

April 4th, 2021

"Oh come on! I'm not even that far away." I say, walking out of the coffee shop, the coffee Reece asked me to get in my hand.

I had gotten a few dirty look from people in the shop, mainly because pregnant women aren't supposed to have much caffeine, let alone a large cold brew, which is loaded with caffeine.

'Just hurry up! I want to run to the store!'

"Yea, well I do too. We still have a few things to get before Hunter arrives."

'You think I don't know? That's why I'm in the store. Alone!'

"I told you to wait outside!"

'Leanna, not the point.'

"I know, I know." I sigh. "But I still told you to wait. Now you have a head start on all the cute clothes!"

'Leanna, focus.'

"Fine. I will."

'Now did you get my coffee?'

"Yes."

'And the-'

"Leah?"

I turn around, not paying attention to whatever else Reece had said.

"Alex?"

"Uh, hi. I see a lot has changed since the last time I saw you." He says, looking down at my stomach.

"Oh, uh, yea. You could say that."

"So how far along are you?"

"I'm due in a couple weeks."

"Nice."

He stands there awkwardly, his hands in his pocket.

"So what are you doing in Accrington?"

"Uh, you're brother asked me to do something."

"Sebastian?"

He nods.

"Oh."

"Why? Is something going on?"

"We haven't spoken much in the past two years."

"Why?"

"Well, for starters he faked my test results to make it seem like I was sick."

"Test results?" His eyes widen when he realizes, his voice full of sadness. "Oh, those."

"Yea."

"And then he lied and said I had cheated."

"Why would he do that?"

"My husband's in a band, and he didn't want me to be in the public."

"So you and Reece are married?"

I nod.

"Oh."

"Is there a problem with that?"

"No, it's just..." He sighs. "I miss you. I miss us. I should never have cheated on you, but I didn't know what to do with you being sick. I couldn't handle it."

"How do you think I felt? I was the sick one!"

"I just couldn't watch you die. I thought that maybe if I had used someone else as a distraction then it would make things better. It only made them worse."

"That makes it even worse."

"Well, it's the truth."

"Uh, thanks for telling me."

"You're welcome." He sighs. "I'm guessing it's too late to ask for a second chance?"

"You're unbelievable. My brother set this up, didn't he?"

"What? No! He asked me to do a favor, but it didn't involve you."

"Wow, that's surprising."

"What does that mean?"

"It means-" I stop. "It means nothing Alex. Now, are you done?"

"No."

"What now?"

"I don't understand what happened between us."

Is he serious?

"Uh, you cheated on me."

"But you know I didn't mean it."

"Everyone says that."

"Leah, please."

"Maybe if you weren't an ass it wouldn't have been like this."

Although I'm happy it did. I would've never met Reece. I probably would still be with this asshole.

"Don't even say that."

"What else am I supposed to say? That everything is okay? Because I can't! Nothing with you is okay anymore. It hasn't been for years!"

"Leanna-"

"No. You don't even get to act like you're my rock anymore. That's not how it works!"

"Please don't-"

"Don't what? You were the one who started this mess!"

"You don't really mean this Leanna. This is the hormones talking."

"Hormones my ass! I am being a reasonable adult, you can't deny that."

"You're barely an adult! It doesn't count!"

"It certainly counts when I'm more mature than you."

I shake my head, turning around.

"I may be twenty one, but I've known how to make the right decisions. I've always known the right and wrong thing. You have always struggled with that."

His face is tear stricken as he stares at me.

Wow. He's really going all in.

Is it bad that I feel like laughing?

"Leanna-"

"Goodbye. I hope I never see you again."

And with that, I was gone.

I hurried down the streets as fast as my pregnant self would take me, stopping in front of the store a few minutes later.

Reece is outside waiting for me, a smile on his face as he sees me. He takes the coffee from my hands as he presses a soft kiss against my lips.

"What's wrong? You seem mad."

"I just had a little run in with Alex."

"Alex? As in your ex?"

I nod. "What other Alex do I know?"

"What's he doing here?"

I shrug. "Not sure, but apparently it was business with my brother."

"Oh boy."

"My thoughts exactly."

"Also, I went in but I didn't look."

"Thank you."

"Now let's go inside."
