chapter fifty-five; real life

December 31st, 2021

I throw the clothes onto the bed, quickly folding them and putting them away. I have less than an hour until people start to arrive, and the house is a mess.

Hunter would scream when i tried to put a toy away, and Luna got into the trash multiple times.

Reece was at the studio with the boys for another twenty minutes, leaving me to do all of this alone.

The only thing I'm looking forward to is the fact that Jamie will be here any minute now to pick up Hunter.

I asked him to take him for a little bit since I was so far behind.

I hadn't even started on food.

The front door opens up, making me pick Hunter up off of the blanket and hurry towards the door.

"Jamie, thank god."

He chuckles. "You look like you're having a rough day."

"You could definitely say that."

"What's going on? I thought you had a New Year's thing going on."

"Well for starters I overslept, Hunter refused to cooperate, and Luna kept getting into the trash. I'm so far behind in everything."

"Do you just want Lyndsey and I to take him for the night?"

"He still doesn't sleep through the night, you don't have to-"

"Leah, it's fine. You don't have to worry about it."

"Are you sure?"

He nods. "Just give us everything for a night and we can handle it."

I walk towards Hunter's room, grabbing everything that would be needed for the night.

Reece gets home by the time I grab the milk and a few containers of solid food from the kitchen, so I tell Reece what's going on.

He nods, not sure about leaving Hunter without us for a night.

"He's got a runny nose, should he stay here?"

"Reece, he's going to be fine." Jamie says. "Your mom and I have two kids, each who had their fair share of illnesses. We know what to do."

"...okay"

I shake my head, passing everything off, including Hunter, to Jamie.

"Goodbye little man." Reece says, pressing his lips against Hunter's forehead.

"We'll bring him back around noon. I think that's enough time for you guys to catch up on some sleep."

"Thanks again for doing this."

"I better get going. Lyndsey was working on dinner when I left."

"Bye Dad!" Reece says, closing the door behind him. "I feel bad for saying this, but I'm so glad we don't have to worry about waking up in the middle of the night. I need the sleep."

I stare at him. "says the guy who wasn't sure that this was a good idea."

"Shut it."

"I'm just saying!"

He walks towards me, wrapping his arms around my waist. He buries his head in the crook of my neck, the same spot he's done since we started dating.

"You have spit up in your hair."

"I do?"

I pull away, running my hand through my hair until I reach the now-hardened spit up.

"Great. Good thing I already needed a shower."

"I'll take care of what I can while you're in the shower."

"Like what?"

"I know you haven't started food so I can order everyone a pizza."

"That works."

"And then I can continue cleaning the living room and laundry, but you should be out by the time I finish the living room."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

I run upstairs, turning on the water and picking out something to wear while the water heats up. I decided on ripped skinny jeans and a loose top, not going for anything fancy.

By the time I finished getting, I could already tell that Reece had finished everything he said he would. All of the laundry that was in the corner was gone, and I heard the vacuum at some point while I was drying my hair.

"You're done!"

I look up from my phone, smiling at Reece.

"I am."

"Well the house is ready, and people should be here in the next fifteen minutes. I put pizza in the oven about two minutes ago, and the house is clean."

"All of that in forty five minutes?"

"Yep! Luna stayed in here most of the time since you were in the bathroom so I didn't have to worry about her dragging all of the dog toys out."

"Let's go downstairs and wait."

"Then we can get the party started."

"Reece! We're not going to get drunk."

"Who said that's what I was talking about? It's a New Year's Party. That's why I said that."

"Right, yea."

"Do you think they'll all be a little bit disappointed that they won't be able to gush over Hunter and crowd him the entire night?"

"Oh they definitely will."
