chapter seventeen; real life

Emily and I arrive at the beach only fifteen minutes later, smiling at the good weather.

"Man, I'll never get used to this." I say, making her laugh.

"Sometimes I think the same thing."

"But you live down here."

"My point. The weather is always so warm and I used to live in Boston, so it's quite a difference. I'm used to there being about two feet of snow in the winter, not sunny days where I can wear shorts. Shorts was like a death sentence back home."

"You're not wrong there. I remember going with you one year to visit your parents and it was hell. Our plane was delayed because of the snow and we missed a shoot."

"Come on, let's get in the water."

I nod, pulling off my shorts and top that I had on. Despite the fact that I no longer wanted to be insecure about the scar, my hand still makes its way to cover it up.

"Leah."

"I know, but it's just an instinct."

"I get that, but today is a day where we both just need to let go and enjoy ourselves. You're beautiful with it, don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

"Reece says the same thing."

"And Reece is right."

I nod, putting my hand back to my side. It suddenly feels like everyone is staring at me.

Well not me, but the giant scar.

"It's not even that noticeable from far away." Emily says as she continues to back up.

"Really? You're not just saying that to make me feel better?"

"No! I'm being dead serious right now!"

"Okay."

I put my phone in my bag and cover it up with a towel before walking towards the water.

"I missed this."

"Missed what?"

"The feeling of the sand in between my toes and the sun on my skin."

"I bet. We used to come down here every day."

"I know."

For the next few hours, Emily and I laughed over the little things, and I had somehow forgotten about the scar.

Finally.

I've been worrying about it for so long when I never needed to.

"Thank you."

"For what?" Emily asks as she picks up her towel.

"For today. I've finally been able to let go."

She smiles, wrapping her arms around me tightly.

"I'm happy for you. For everything you do."

"I want to ask you something."

"Yea?"

"So Reece and I finally decided on a date for the wedding last night."

"You did?"

I nod, pulling away from her embrace.

"And I was wondering if you would be my maid of honor."

Her smile widens. "Are you serious?"

I nod.

"I would love to!" She wraps her arms around me even tighter, jumping up slightly as she does.

"You're suffocating me." I say jokingly.

"Sorry." She breaks away, letting out an excited squeal. "This is amazing! I'm so happy for you!"

"I will pay for your flight to England."

"No, you already have to worry about wedding costs."

"Emily, I'm paying for it. You're going to fly over five thousand miles just for this."

"Paying for my own plane ticket will work out in the long run. I get to see you get married!"

"Well at least let me pay for when you have to come up and get fitted for your gown."

She sighs. "I'm not going to win, am I?"

"Nope."

"Fine, but that's the only thing you're buying me."

"Good."

"So when is the wedding?"

"September."

"Really?"

I nod.

"That gives you plenty of time to figure everything out."

"I know. That's part of the reason we chose it."

She smiles. "I can't even tell you enough how happy I am for you."

"Well you don't have to repeat it every five minutes."

"Uh, yes. I believe I do."

I chuckle, grabbing my bag and searching for my phone, finding it all the way at the bottom.
