chapter thirty-four; real life

April 4th, 2021

I walk into the store, immediately overwhelmed with everything inside.

"Uh, how do we decide?"

"I don't actually know."

Reece walks over to the area for boys, his eyes widening when he sees everything.

"What's this?"

He holds up a box, and I laugh.

"A pump."

"What?"

"A pump."

"For when a baby is like constipated or something?"

"Reece."

"Yea?"

"Stop talking."

"What's it for?"

"Breast feeding."

"I was way off."

"I noticed."

"What do you do if a baby is constipated?"

"Uhhh, I don't exactly know."

"You're not going to be one of those moms that breast feed in public, are you?"

"No. I don't have the confidence for that."

He nods.

"Why?"

"I don't know. It's a natural thing, but like, why would you just pull your boob out in public for the whole world to see? I wouldn't just whip my-"

I cut him off. "That's why there are covers."

"There are?"

"Oh my god. Reece, you have no idea what you're doing."

"I don't!" He sighs. "It scares me. A lot."

"It scares a lot of people. You never know what you're doing until the baby is here."

"That doesn't help. What if I drop him?"

"I'm sorry, I couldn't help but overhearing. This is your first kid?"

Reece and I turn around to see a woman who doesn't look much older than us with a little girl behind her. She was also pregnant, but her bump was smaller than mine.

"Uh, yea. I'm pretty nervous about it."

"You don't have to worry. It's not as bad as you think. Trust me when I say that too."

"Really?"

"It might seem hard at the beginning, but it gets a lot easier."

"Thank you."

"What are you looking for?"

"Just supplies in general."

"How much longer do you have?"

"April 11th."

"So you're closing in? How do you feel?"

"I'm excited. And nervous. It's a lot of both right now."

"New moms are like that."

She reaches on to the shelves, grabbing a few things and putting it in the basket Reece was carrying.

"These are a few essentials. There's a few pacifiers, some bottles, bibs, gloves-"

"Gloves? Babies have gloves?" Reece asks, picking them up at looking at them. "Holy crap they're tiny."

"Yea. They get cold easily, so you want to wrap them up as much as you can the first few days."

"Why are they so tiny?"

"Reece, a newborn is way smaller than you think."

"What?"

"Yea"

"I'm not prepared whatsoever."

"I'm not either."

"At least you know what you're doing! I've been so busy lately I don't have five minutes to sit and read a baby book."

"Those always help." The woman says.

"See? I'm not prepared whatsoever. Why'd we decide on kids so early?"

"We didn't!"

The woman laughs.

"I'm Michelle."

She reaches into her purse, pulling out a piece of paper and writing on it.

"Here's my number. Call me if you have any questions."

She hands me the paper, and I smile.

"And maybe these two can have a play date when they're older."

She points to our stomachs, making me laugh.

"Id like that."

"I'm Leah, by the way."

"Nice to meet you."

She takes her basket and heads towards the front, going to the counter to check out.

"Pregnant women are nice."

"When they're not a raging hormonal bitch." Reece mutters, and I hit his arm.

"Reece!"

"Like that!" He says, rubbing the spot I hit him.

"I didn't even hit you that hard!"

"I was already bruised there!"

"Aww, did I hit your boo boo?"

He sighs, walking over and grabbing more pacifiers and bottles.

"Are these good?"

"I guess?"

"And what about these?"

He holds up a box of diapers.

"Reece."

"Yea? They're diapers!"

"Yes, but look at the size."

"There are sizes?"

"Yea. The one you have is what Indie wears now."

"But she's like 2 or 3 months away from being a year old."

"Exactly."

"So definitely not this size."

"You want the newborn ones, and get a small box because they usually grow out of them quickly."

He nods, grabbing the smallest box there was, which wasn't even that small.

"This one?"

"Yes."

He throws it in the basket.

"Can we check out now?"

"No! I want to get an outfit for when he's born."

"Ooh! Baby clothes!"

He hurries off, skipping every few steps.

Uh oh.

"Reece!"

ugh finals start Friday and I'm not happy

so updates might be a little bit slow for the next week and a half since I'll be studying my butt off

I'm not sure yet because for some reason no matter how busy I am I always find the time to write

so yea

I guess you'll see if I can write or not based off of when I put out the next chapter
