chapter thirty-eight; real life

April 16th, 2021

"What do you feel like watching?"

I shrug. "Just nothing too loud. I don't want to bother Hunter at all."

He nods. "Do you want my parents to watch him tonight while we're out for dinner?"

"I don't know."

"You already told me that."

"I know, but I have the same fear all new mothers do."

"Leaving him?"

I nod.

"It's not like we're leaving him with your mom."

I stare at him, unsure of what to say.

"Sorry."

"No, you're right. It would be a million times worse if we were to leave him with my mother."

"See? My parents are perfectly capable of watching him."

I nod. "Fine, but it's only for a couple of hours. Dinner and that's it."

"Fine. As long as we're able to do something for your birthday it's fine by me."

"So then what time are we going for dinner?"

"Six."

"Good thing it's only noon."

Reece looks over at me at the sound of knocking on the front door. We weren't expecting anyone, and this makes me think of two weeks ago, on the night Hunter was born.

Reece's parents had shown up unexpectedly, only to check on us.

Well that totally went how they expected.

He stands up, walking over to the door and laughing at who is there.

"Who is it?"

The door opens up, and all I hear is yelling.

"Uncle Con is here!"

"And so is Brad!"

They walk inside, and I was so happy Hunter was actually awake. He had just woken up too, so he was a bit fussy.

"Oh my god." Connor looks at Hunter. "I have the cutest nephew ever!"

Brad walks over, smiling the second he sees Hunter.

"He's adorable."

"You guys can hold him, just wash your hands first. I don't want him getting sick."

They nod.

"On it."

They walk into the kitchen, and I can hear them fighting over who gets to hold him first.

Not that it matters anyways.

Well it kind of does because if they're still fighting when one of them gets ahold of Hunter, then they may actually drop him.

Reece takes Hunter from my arms, and I press a quick kiss to his lips before sitting back down on the couch.

"I'm blood related!"

"And you think I care?"

"Guys!"

They stop arguing and look over at Reece, who was running his hands through his hair.

"I swear to god if either of you drop my son you're dead to me." He threatens, but I know he's not serious.

Well not completely.

Brad gulps, his eyes widening.

"Con? You can hold him first. I don't want to piss Reece off."

Connor looks over at Brad, trying not to laugh.

"It's not that hard to hold a baby."

"Well I don't want to piss Reece off. I'll let you do that."

"Why me?"

"Because you guys are actually related."

"He has a point." I say, chuckling.

"Thank you."

Brad walks over to me, wrapping his arms around me in a tight hug.

"How are you feeling? Sorry we couldn't be here earlier."

"I'm good. Adjusting has been a little weird, but it's not too bad."

"That's good."

"How are you?"

"Good."

"That's good."

He sighs, looking over at Hunter. "I can't believe you have a kid. And before me!"

"Well you need a significant other for that."

"I know."

I smile. "It's still seems so surreal that I actually have a kid."

"Connor can't believe it either."

I chuckle. "That's because he's always sworn he's going to have like 3 by the time I get married."

"That worked out so well."

I smile, looking over at Con, who was now sat on the couch with Hunter in his arms. A smile never leaving his face.

When Hunter began to cry, he started freaking out.

"What do I do?"

"He just needs a diaper change." Reece says calmly.

"Well you can do that."

"You're going to have to do something at some point."

"Not when he barely weighs anything! I'm not doing it."

"Con-"

"Leah."

I stop, sighing. "Fine. Give him here."

"No! You need rest. You were up all night with him." Reece takes Hunter before I have the chance to, and he walks into the nursery.

"Why were you the one up?" Brad asks.

"Because last time I checked guys didn't have boobs."

it's Christmas break and I'm excited

Also I did way better on finals than I thought I would so there's that
