chapter fifty-four; real life

December 25th, 2021

Reece smiles widely as he runs down the stairs.

"You alright?"

"Why didn't you wake me up? It's Christmas!"

"Because it was seven in the morning, I didn't feel like waking you up since you didn't fall asleep until 4."

"That doesn't mean anything!"

"I don't think you want to be sleep deprived on Christmas Day."

"I guess you're right."

I nod, standing up and wrapping my arms around his waist.

"Merry Christmas Reece."

"Merry Christmas Leanna."

He kisses my forehead, making me smile.

"I feel like we don't get very many moments like these anymore." I say quietly.

"Imagine if we had two kids. We would definitely not get any time like this. Hunter would be running around and the other one would be crying every minute."

I chuckle. "Or they would be quiet and reserved like some babies are."

"That would be amazing."

Hunter giggles at something, and when we look over, he isn't on the blanket anymore.

"Hunter?"

I hear more giggling from the kitchen, which turns into full on laughter.

"What is going on in there?" Reece asks.

"You're not paying attention to the real thing."

"What are you talking about?"

"Hunter crawled!"

"Wait, what?"

"He must've! He was just on that blanket!"

Reece smiles, running towards the kitchen. I follow him in, gasping when I see Hunter next to Luna, the dog food and water all over him and the ground.

"Oh boy, looks like we have to start monitoring everything."

"We could just get a baby gate for the kitchen."

"You want to be one of those parents?" Reece questions.

I laugh. "What's wrong with keeping a baby from getting into trouble?"

"Nothing, I just don't want baby gates all over the place."

"So you would rather have our son pull out all of the pots and pans or everything else in the cabinets?"

He sighs. "I'll look online."

"Alright, while you do that, will you take Hunter and Luna with you? I'll clean this up."

"Yea. Could I just go ahead and give Hunter a bath? I'll look for the gate right after."

"Reece, you're his parent too. You don't have to ask me permission."

"Right, yea. I'm going to go give him a bath now."

He reaches down, picking up Hunter, holding him a few inches away so he doesn't get soaked.

"Come on Luna!"

Reece walks out of the kitchen, Luna happily following him.

I sigh, picking up a towel and mopping everything up.
