You've always been called the 'Queen Among Setters' by those who have seen you play. You enrolled into Aoba Johsai after getting expelled by your previous school for some rebellious acts.
Now, you're a first year, standing outside the gym. Hearing the squeaks of shoes and bouncing of volleyballs, the excitement in your heart was just too much to contain.
You slammed the door open, and a stray ball was hurled with great force towards your face. There were many voices yelling for you to watch out, but your setter instinct kicked in and you bent down, setting the ball up high and spiking it back to the players.
Not only the players were surprised, you were astonished too. 'I may have just walked into the wrong gym', you thought to yourself, embarrassed.
"That was a nice set," their number 4 complimented. You gave a small smile and a brunette, their captain, approached.
"Do you want to join us for practice? Our opponents need a setter."
That was all it took to get you in the court. You joined the team and took a few moments to know their spikers' attack style.
The whistle blew, and the opponent got the first serve. Your libero received it but it was a little off. Without looking at the spikers too much, you set the ball to the middle blocker, who did a first tempo.
He slammed the ball down on the ground hard and your team cheered.
Throughout the match, you did a few dumps and did not miss a set. You received the ball perfectly as well, which gave the opponents a hard time.
In the end, the opponents still won but your efforts and skills did not go unrecognized by the coach and the regulars.
You stayed with the team until practice ended. You analysed their style of play and how the setter and spiker matched. It was interesting, you admitted it.
"You're an extraordinary setter, perhaps even better than me," their captain, Oikawa Tooru, praised in shimmering eyes. You thanked him for the compliment, followed by an awkward silence.
"What's your name?" He asked with a smile. You hesitated for a moment and answered.
"(First Name) (Last Name)."
-
Ever since that day, Oikawa has been following you everywhere around school, asking about your past and why didn't you attend powerhouse schools.
You remained silent, hoping he'd leave you alone and let you have some peace. But he was persistent, the fact that your first meeting with him was only a week ago was weird.
"Are you planning to join the girls' volleyball team?" The brunette inquired. You pursed your lips, drifting into a train of thoughts.
"Maybe, I would like to join the boys' team as a manager," you replied.
He seemed confused by your answer. "But don't you want to play? With that skills of yours, you can definitely lead the team to Nationals."
You remained silent, but the 'I have so much to say but I can't' type.
Oikawa seemed to understand it, and he kept quiet for awhile before chirping, "Let's go get dinner!"
-
A month or so passed, and you didn't really make much friends in school. All you had was the volleyball team players and some classmates.
For the past month, you had been deeply grateful to Oikawa. He has always been there for you whenever you needed something.
When you needed help with homework, he offered to tutor you so you could pass your exams. Not to mention he always initiated to walk to you after practice, sometimes ditching his best buddy, Iwaizumi. As if Iwaizumi minded it.
Oikawa's birthday was a few hours away, and you spent all night folding paper stars and putting the lucky charm into the box along with the stars.
-
The next day, many girls who have been crushing on Oikawa crowded around him to give him presents.
In the background, you were standing there with disappointment filling you. You just couldn't approach him without feeling shy and nervous. You were unsure of your feelings to be honest.
Then, you felt a tap on your shoulder. "Iwaizumi-senpai?"
"There's still plenty of time," he eyed the box in your hands and walked away, leaving you with a confident smile.
-
Practice went by faster than usual, and the team planned to celebrate their captain's birthday at a restaurant in town.
As they were discussing about it while cleaning up the gym after practice, you couldn't help but feel like an outsider although you're their manager.
You felt that way until, "You're coming right, (First Name)-chan?" Oikawa asked eagerly. You blinked in confusion and saw Iwaizumi give you an assuring smile.
"I'm coming."
-
After dinner, the team bought cans and bottles of beer to Oikawa's house since his parents are out of the country.
Everyone was having a good time drinking, watching some comedy show on the television and laughing.
You gathered all the courage you could find and took the setter out from the room to the balcony, holding the present you handmade behind your back.
"Happy birthday, Oikawa," you handed the present to him and adverted your gaze away from his. Little did he know, you weren't stopping here.
"I'll tell you my past, I'm ready to open up now."
He gestured you to sit down beside him and waited for you start speaking.
"The reason why I stopped playing volleyball after winning Nationals in middle school was because of my feelings. I was up against my best friend in Nationals, and when we won, I didn't feel happy at all. All I cared was her devastated and disappointed expression."
He kept quiet, although he was tired, he still seemed so focused on your speech.
"Since then, I always felt guilty while playing volleyball. Even though many schools were requesting for my enrolment in their school for me
to play for them, I rejected every single one of them. People referred me as the 'Queen of Setters', but it was also 99% hard work and 1% natural talent."Without you realising, his head fell on your shoulder and his breathing got calmer and steadier.
"But after I met you, I got inspired and motivated to play again. To me, you're the best setter, Oikawa Tooru."
With that, you rested your head on top of his and soon after you drifted to sleep, his hand found its way to yours and he intertwined both of your hands together.
